Key Points to Consider: 1- Proper Wood Drying It is not possible to make a quality product that will last with improperly dried wood. We suggest you engage in a discussion with the artisan about drying and ask the right questions. A combination of air drying and kiln drying is ideal! It is not a best practice to work with wood that has been put into a kiln shortly after is has been cut. Most of our wood has been air dried for 1-2 years before be finished dried in a kiln. Trying to expedite this process makes if much more likely that cupping, bowing, twisting, cracking and a compromised finish will occur. We'd love to chat more! 2- Finish Technique There are a lot of different ways to apply finish to a product and just as many types of finish that can be applied. With over 4 years of working with slab wood and trying a lot of different techniques we have refined our process down to using an HVLP sprayer in a spray booth. Most shops don't have the space, money or time to use this technique. Avoid hand applied penetrating oils if you want to avoid water rings and damage from cups or spills. 3- Shipping/Crating We build a custom crate with a process refined over 4 years. We have shipped almost 500 items. We use only specialized carriers(for larger pieces) that focus on furniture and proper handling of one of a kind products that are larger. We use FedEx ground for smaller items. We do not use Grey Hound...your piece is not luggage! :) We further elaborate on some of this on our website!
