This design is the symbol representing the goddess Asase Ya (or Asase Yaa, Asaase Yaa, Asaase Afua). She is the Earth goddess of fertility of the Bono people, an Akan ethnic group of Ghana, and is also known as Mother Earth or Aberewaa. This symbol represents the importance of the Earth in sustaining life, the divinity of the earth, providence, power/authority, wealth, and might. Fertility might refer to agriculture, pregnancy, or a fertile mind...the meaning is up to you. Your working piece will be 48 beads across & 120 rows long; if you use the recommended size 11/0 Miyuki Delicas, it will be 4" (10 cm) long & 2.5" (6.3 cm) wide. You can lengthen it by adding rows of solid color & the top & bottom. If you use beads other than Delicas, the dimensions will be different & the design might have a different appearance. The pattern was designed with a black motif on a white background, but as you can see, I chose to make the motif in a different color; the color choice is up to you. It would have a very different look if the light & dark colors were reversed. TIPS: For a stiffer piece, use thicker thread (I used 0.17mm Fireline). There are multiple options for displaying your finished piece. You can frame it, sew it onto fabric (perhaps a cushion). To hang it, you can attach a length of chain to each of the top corners or weave a ladder stitch "chain" & attach it in the same manner. Other options are to weave 2 or 3 peyote stitch loops at the top & thread a cord through them or weave extra rows of solid color at the top, fold the top over, sew it to the base, & then insert a cord through the channel you've just created. Here's what you'll get: downloadable pdf with a preview image, bead legend (Miyuki Delica color numbers & quantities for each color), peyote graph, & word chart. The bead quantities listed in the pattern do not include the extra beads for the picot edge & the ladder stitch hanging loop at the top. This is a pattern only, not a tutorial; it presumes knowledge of 2-drop even count peyote stitch. *** Here's a link to Etsy's instructions for downloading your pattern after purchase: https://help.etsy.com/hc/en-us/articles/115013328108-Downloading-a-Digital-Item?segment=shopping Happy beading!
