“Obon” Artist Miya Ando released 1,000 non-toxic resin leaves coated w/ phosphorescence into a small pond in Puerto Rico. During the day the leaves would “recharge”, & by night, give off a ghostly, ethereal glow. The installation “Obon” was inspired by a Japanese Buddhist festival of the same name, & to simulate Puerto Rico’s bioluminescent bays, a natural phenomenon caused by dinoflagellates, photosynthetic underwater organisms that emit light when agitated. 2013 http://www.spoon-tamago.com/2012/06/14/obon-miya-ando-1000-floating-leaves/
