With my high school photography students, I often do this digital portrait assignment as an introductory project for the photo course. However, it can be done at any point throughout the year. It asks them to do a CREATIVE PORTRAIT that deals with the idea of "inside on the outside" (this assignment is great for seniors!). They can do either a self-portrait or a portrait of someone they know well, and they have to capture the person's key likes and interests in the portrait. It asks them to show how OUTSIDE things (clothing, collections etc.) can show what's really inside a person and define who they are. It's a great challenge! You'll get some really creative material from them, and they love it because it's so open. This could also easily be tweaked and used as a darkroom project. Also included is a rubric to make marking easy, as well as a breakdown of the steps of the project, to show students that PROCESS is key! -planning -photographing -matting their prints for display Enjoy!
