Here is how I use this resource in my classroom: My students and I read a nonfiction article together (via Scope magazine, the internet, or their textbook). When finished, I distribute an answer sheet to all students (copied front and back). Students move from one station to the next at their own pace. I feel like this is best so I do not have students sitting and doing nothing while waiting on a timer to go off. I decide which station is going to be our "focus station" and set that station up at my small group table. I work with students one-on-one, in partners, or in a small group as they come to that station. Once all stations have been completed, I will either take up their answer sheet as formative/summative assessment or we will grade and go over the material together in class. Other ideas: You can have students read the articles independently, in pairs, or in a small group before beginning the stations. You can strategically group or pair your students for working at the stations so you will have all of your struggling readers together and can assist them or have mixed ability groups/ partners so students will have a peer helper. To use these stations: Copy an answer sheet for each student (front and back). Pages 10-11 Print a station label tent for each station on card stock or thick paper to label the stations. pages 2-9 Print one (or more) station information sheets for each station.
