Marysville Victoria -- Lake Mountain is fairly reliable for snow. Very close to Melbourne. You can drive right up to the snow& park next to the main toboggan run. Accommodation in Narbethong & limited accommodation in Marysville. Plenty of hire options - recommend Narbethong (don't hire on the mountain - way too expensive). If going on a weekend, get there early (before 9.30 for best car parking). Close enough for a day trip from Melbourne - which is what most people do.
