Our next project is a fun Halloween project. You will use the worksheets as a guide as you roll a die to randomly select the parts of a monster to draw. After you draw your monster you will need to color it in full color. You can also add extra details and textures to make your monster unique. Monsters need to be drawn on the provided paper and fill the page. (No tiny monsters!) You will create two monsters for this project. DIRECTIONS: There are 4 different options below. Choose 1 worksheet per monster and complete all the requested rolls for your monster. Roll the die and draw the corresponding shape that matches the number you land on to create your monster. ARTIST/DESIGNER: Michael Halsband Michael is known for his striking portraits of celebrities, from rock stars to artists, and his commercial work for major publications such as Vogue, GQ, and Esquire. In 1981 and 1982, Halsband was the photographer for the Rolling Stones tour and became the photographer for several significant editorials and advertising campaigns in the following years. His visibility as a photographer and connection with celebrities led him to the photo shoot that became one of his most recognized projects. Halsband was invited to a private dinner in a restaurant downtown by Andy Warhol and was seated next to Basquiat. The two initiated an extended conversation, which led to Halsband being offered the commission to shoot the poster for the upcoming exhibit at the Shafrazi gallery opening. The resulting image is pure Eighties NYC history, as both Warhol and Basquiat would die just a few years later. BRAND/COMPANY: Tony Shafrazi gallery opening VIP after party at the Palladium This poster is a ticket to the VIP after-party for the Warhol / Basquiat opening downtown. The Palladium was recently opened and was the hot club of the moment in mid-Eighties NYC. The most interesting fact from this show and event was the critic and press fallout. The 16 paintings displayed were widely panned, and the show was dismissed as a Warholian pop culture public relations stunt. The body of work was not well received, but this image of both Basquiat and Warhol set up as boxing partners remains emblematic of the hip art scene of NYC downtown in the Eighties. The choice of the Palladium as the VIP after-party venue was also pitch-perfect as a PR gesture, as it was a white-hot club destination downtown in the mid-1980s. STORY/DESCRIPTION: Tony Shafrazi gallery opening VIP after party at the Palladium This poster was printed for actual use as admission to the VIP after-party, post-art opening at the Tony Shafrazi gallery. It was a clever ruse, setting up the two artists as duelling boxers preparing for the ring. The show displayed just 16 collaborative paintings created between Warhol and Basquiat over s short period bridging 1984 to 1985. Oddly, it was a financial failure, and the fallout from this debacle would signal the beginning of the end of the friendship between the two artists. They had met in the late '70s when Basquiat was a budding street artist composing sketches and ad - hoc paintings in Greenwich Village. This particular image, over time, became iconic as one of the most enduring images of the art scene in 1980s downtown NYC.
