Lesson 9 12. Jehoahaz 13. Jehoash 14. Jeroboam 2 15. Zechariah 16. Shallum Kings #12 - #14 of Israel 2 Kings 13:1- 2 Kings 14:23-29 12. Jehoahaz 2 Kings 13:1-9 While King Joash of Judah was in his 23rd year of reign, Jehoahaz the son of Jehu became the king of Israel. He was a king for 17 years in Samaria. Like the other kings of Israel, he was evil and worshipped the golden calves. God was angry and let the Syrians take them into captivity by King Hazael of Syria. The Syrians burdened the people and King Jehoahaz pleaded with God to help them. God answered and they escaped the Syrians and went back to their tents. They still did not follow God’s laws and worshipped the golden calves. There were only 50 horsemen, 10 chariots and 10,000-foot soldiers left in his army. When he died, his son Joash became the king of Israel. 13. Jehoash 2 Kings 13:9-13 While King Joash of Judah was in his 37th year of reign, Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz became the next king of Israel. He was a king for 16 years. He was like the other kings and did not follow God’s laws. He worshipped the golden calf that Jeroboam made. Elisha was the prophet at the time and he was sick and would eventually die from this illness. Jehoash went to visit him and cried when he saw Elisha. Elisha told Jehoash to “Take a bow and some arrows. Put your hand on the bow.” Elisha put his hands on top of Jehoash’s hands. He told Jehoash to open the east window and shoot an arrow. Elisha told him that he would win against Syria and that he was to attack at Aphek and destroy them all. Then Elisha told him to use his arrows and hit the ground with them. Which Jehoash did; but he stopped after 3 arrows. Elisha was angry and said he should have shot 5 or 6 times! He could have destroyed Syria! But, since he only shot 3 times, he would only attack Syria 3 times. King Hazael of Syria fought against Israel the whole time Jehoash was the king. God was watching over them and when Hazael died, and his son became the king, Jehoash was able to recapture some of the cities that had been lost in other battles. Jehoash won 3 battles against the Syrians. During his second year of reign, Amaziah became the king of Israel. He won some battles which made him feel victorious and eager to fight against King Jehoash. Amaziah sent a message to Jehoash stating he wanted to face him in battle. But, Jehoash sent a story back as a reply. It said there was a thistle in Lebanon that sent a message to the cedar in Lebanon “Give your daughter to my son as his wife.” But a wild animal went by and trampled the thistle. Jehoash said “Be satisfied that you have conquered Edom! Stay home and don’t cause fights that you will lose and take down Judah with you!” But, Amaziah didn’t listen and they went to battle. Jehoash won the battle and captured King Amaziah of Judah at Beth Shemesh. Jehoash went to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem 400 cubits from the Gate of Ephraim to the Corner Gate. He took all the gold and the silver and all the articles in the temple. He also took treasures from the king’s house along with hostages and returned to Samaria. When he died, his son Jeroboam became the king. He was buried with the other kings of Israel. 14. Jeroboam the 2nd 2 Kings 14:23-29 The first king of Israel was Jeroboam, so this king is referred to as the second. Jeroboam was the son of Jehoash. He became the king of Israel and reigned for 41 years. He lived in Samaria. He was evil and didn’t follow God’s laws. There was an earthquake during his reign. See Amos 1:1. God gave back some of the land of Israel from Damascus to Hamath during his reign. When Jeroboam 2 died, his son Zechariah became the king. 15. Zechariah 2 Kings 15:8-12 While King Azariah of Judah was in his 38th year of reign, Zechariah became the king of Israel. He lived in Samaria and ruled for 6 months. He was the son of Jeroboam 2. He did evil like the other kings of Israel and didn’t worship God. Shallum conspired against him. He struck Zechariah and killed him in front of the people. God had told King Jehu that his ‘sons’ would be the king for 4 generations and He had kept his promise. (2 Kings 10:30 & 2 Kings 15:12-13) 16. Shallum 2 Kings 15:13-16 Shallum was the son of Jabesh. He became the king of Israel during the 39th year of King Uzziah of Judah. He was king for a ‘full month’ before Menahem struck him and killed him. Menahem became the next king. I found these great bulletin boards on a Facebook page I belong to. Thanks to Laura Cann for permission to share them with you. Please note that the ladies at the Southside Church of Christ in Rapid City, South Dakota put the boards together. It was a group effort. So, thanks ladies for the photos and for sharing your bulletin boards here! I appreciate it! These are not in any order. Since they are not mine, I just have the photos for you to use for inspiration. This Divided Kingdom bulletin board is a large board. The background is gray fabric (not paper). I like that the castle is cut in half. ☺ Note: I just (3 Jan 2018) stumbled on this bulletin board at Hands On Bible Teacher. Credit goes to Rhonda for the original concept for the bulletin board and sorry I didn't see it earlier. That is what Pinterest is for! Although I believe in giving the original designers the credit. Check out the website for a lot of Bible class ideas and songs. Click here to see the printables to create this bulletin board. It looks like a small bulletin board was covered to use as the land. The wording and top people and scroll is around it on the wall. They attached plastic grapes to make it pop. The bulletin board has the background with the purchased birds to make it pop. Look for these birds in October. I see them at craft stores and dollar stores. The brook has sparkling gift shred that the kids will love! This board also has the main design on the bulletin board. The scripture and wording is around it on the wall. I like the 'fire of the Lord' coming down!
VERSES: 1 Kings 12:1-33 MEMORY VERSE: 1 Kings 12:19 "So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day." BOOK TO REMEMBER: Esther. Write "Esther" on small slips of paper and hand out at the end of class. PRAYER: Pray that we will always have that good and honest heart that will accept good advice from godly men and women. SPECIAL SONG: Read, Read Every Day (see February - Songs We Sing In Bible Class #1 on this blog) VISUAL AID: Take an old shirt and cut it in twelves pieces before the students. Explain about how the kingdom was divided in twelve parts. Choose two children, one holding a sign that says, "Jeroboam" and the holding a sign that says "Rehoboam. Ten tribes are given to Jeroboam and two tribes are given to Rehoboam. Would be nice to have two crowns, one that says King Of Israel and the other King of Judah. This is a difficult concept for the children--and some adults--to understand. Perhaps this exercise will make it more clear. LESSON POINTS: After Solomon died, his son Rehoboam traveled to the city of Shechem because that was where all Israel had planned to make him king. We remember how Solomon behaved before he died and the prophet of God said that Jeroboam, Solomon's servant, would be given ten tribes for him to rule over, but Solomon's son, Rehoboam, would only rule over the remaining two tribes. The Kingdom was divided into two parts: Judah and Israel. Before Solomon's death, there was just one kingdom that Solomon ruled over. King David ruled over one kingdom. King Saul ruled over one kingdom. But, now, there were two parts to the kingdom. Jeroboam had run away to Egypt because Solomon had tried to kill him. King Solomon wanted all of the kingdom to go to his son, Rehoboam, but that was not God's plan. Ten tribes of Israel sent for Jeroboam to come back to Jerusalem. Jeroboam and Israel talked to Rehoboam. They told him how his father had made their yoke very hard and they asked if Rehoboam would make their burden lighter. If Rehoboam would do what they asked, then they would serve him. Rehoboam told them that he would think about it and get back to them in three days. In the meantime, Rehoboam asked the old men who had served his father what he should do. The old, wise men told Rehoboam to serve the people and speak good things to the people, then they would be his servants forever. Rehoboam also talked to the young men whom he grew up with and asked them what they thought he should do. The young, foolish men told Rehoboam to tell the people that he was going to rule harder and harshly with the people and would add to their yoke. They told Rehoboam to tell the people that his father had disciplined the people with whips, but he was going to discipline them with scorpions! On the third day, Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam just like they had three days before. Rehoboam gave them his answer. He chose not the good advice, but he chose the young foolish men's advice. So when all the people knew that Rehoboam had not listened to them, they did not like his answer and Israel revolted or separated themselves from Rehoboam and did not accept him as their king. Only the people in the cities of Judah accepted Rehoboam as king and he ruled over them. So, Rehoboam ruled over Judah. Rehoboam was the King of Judah. When Israel heard that Jeroboam was back from Egypt, they made him king and followed Jeroboam and he ruled over them. So, Jeroboam ruled over Israel. Jeroboam was the king of Israel. Rehoboam was not happy. He began counting all the soldiers that were in Judah and he was preparing to fight Israel, but the Word of God came to Shemaiah, a man of God, and said to tell Rehoboam not to fight his brothers and for everyone to go back to his own tent. God was behind what was happening to the kingdom. Then Jeroboam led the people of Israel to sin. He did a terrible thing! He made two golden calves for the people to worship. He placed one golden calf in Bethel and one golden calf in Dan, so it would be more convenient for the people to worship the idols. He set up idols in the high places and sacrificed to the calves. He made up everything he did in his own head and never consulted God. We will see what God has to say about all this next time. ACTIVITY: Materials needed: 5" x 7" piece of yellow construction paper, 9" x 12" piece of blue construction paper, 9" x 12" piece of red construction paper, scissors, stapler, staples, balck and white crayons. Hand out red construction paper. Fold in half. Staple up sides, leaving top open. Do the same with the blue paper. On the red pocket, write "Jeroboam, King of Israel" On the blue pocket, write "Rehoboam, King of Judah" and "1 Kings 12." Hand out yellow paper. Draw a large coat. Cut up coat into twelve pieces. Put two pieces of the coat into Rehoboam's pocket. Put ten pieces of the coat into Jeroboam's pocket. Tell the story of the coat symbolizing the kingdom and how it was divided up.
VERSES: 1 Kings 13:1-10 MEMORY VERSE: 1 Kings 13:4 "...And his hand, which he put forth from him, dried up, and he could not pull it again to him." BOOK TO REMEMBER: Review all the Old Testament book from Genesis to Esther. Check to make sure all students are remembering the books. We have talked about displaying individual charts and giving stickers to those who can say the Bible books from Genesis to a particular book. This is a great help and incentive to students of all ages. PRAYER: Pray that we stay close to God, treasure His Word, and walk in His steps. SPECIAL SONG: Be Careful Little Eyes (see March - Songs We Sing In Bible Class #3 on this blog) VISUAL AID: Bible map, showing Bethel and Jerusalem; large Activity below. LESSON POINTS: Remember that the kingdom of Israel had been divided from being one kingdom and now was divided up into two kingdoms. Do we remember the names of the two kingdoms? The kingdom of Israel and the kingdom of Judah. Who was the King of Israel? That's right! King Jeroboam! Jeroboam stayed mostly in the city of Bethel. Was he related to King Solomon? No! He was King Solomon's servant while King Solomon was alive. Jeroboam had made two golden calves and placed one in Dan and the other in Bethel which was idolatry. Jeroboam was making up his own rules on how to worship and he was causing the kingdom of Israel to sin. We know how God was a jealous God, don't we? Jeroboam should have known better, but he did not care about the LORD God and His commands. Who was the King of Judah, the other part of the original kingdom? King Rehoboam, who was King Solomon's son. Rehoboam lived mostly in Jerusalem. In the beginning of his rule over Judah, he tried to do what was right in God's eyes. For three years he walked in the ways of David and his father, Solomon (2 Chronicles 11:17). One day there was a man of God (we don't know his name) who came to Bethel where Jeroboam was because God had sent him there.Jeroboam was standing by the altar to burn incense when the man of God spoke the word of the LORD and said that a child would be born into the house of David named Josiah and he prophesied that Josiah, many years in the future, would burn incense and burnt offerings upon Jeroboam's bones. The man of God said, as a sign that those things would happen, that the altar would be torn in two and the ashes would pour out of it and it happened just like the man of God said it would. The alter broke in two and ashes came out of it. King Jeroboam did not like that one bit! He raised his arm and told the soldiers to hold the man of God, so he could not get away. Right then, Jeroboam's hand dried up and he could not pull it back to himself. Jeroboam asked the man of God, the one he was going hold, to pray to the LORD for him that his hand might be restored and the man of God prayed for him. His hand was fixed just like it had been before. The king asked him to come and go home with him and the king would give him a reward, but the man of God would not go because God told him not to go; in fact, God had told him not to eat bread, drink water or go back the same way he came into the city. "Older Student" Tips: God knows the future and He is in control! Just like the man of God prophesied 277 years before, Josiah was born and was the king of Judah (2 Kings 21:24). What God says, happens! Even though Jeroboam;s hand had been withered or dried up and restored again, Jeroboam still did not worship the LORD God. ACTIVITY: "Jeroboam's Withered Hand" Materials needed: 9" x 12" tan construction paper, pencil, scissors, black and brown crayon. Hand out tan paper. Student places on of their arms on the paper, mid-forearm. Trace with a pencil. Cut out arm. On one side, draw brown lines like wrinkles all over the arm and hand. Write "Jeroboam's Withered Hand" and "1 Kings 13" on the withered hand. Turn hand over. Write "1 Kings 13:6" and "...and the king's hand was restored again..."
We've all had that one friend who gives advice that sounds good until you follow it. We need to teach our kids how to recognize bad advice when they hear it.
Lesson 4 2. Abijam & 3. Asa 4. Jehoshaphat #2 - #4 Kings of Judah 1 Kings 14:31-15:24 & 22:41-51 2 Chronicles 13-20 Remember the first kings were Saul, David and Solomon. The kingdom divided into the northern and southern kingdoms. Rehoboam was the first king of Judah which was the southern kingdom. It consisted of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin. (see map) 2. Abijam 1 Kings 14:31-15:8 & 2 Chronicles 13:1-14:1 Note: He is called Abijam in 1 Kings and Abijah in 2 Chronicles. When Rehoboam died, his son Abijam became king of Judah. King Jeroboam of Israel was in his 18th year of reign. Abijam was the king in Jerusalem for 3 years. He followed the same sins as his father and did not worship God. For David, God let Abijam set up the kingdom in Jerusalem. King Rehoboam and King Jeroboam had war between them all their life. The war between the kings carried on with King Abijam. Abijam had 14 wives, 22 sons and 16 daughters. When Abijam died, his son Asa became the king. Note: Verse 8 states that Abijam was buried in the City of David. That is what we know as Jerusalem. 3. Asa 1 Kings 15:9-24 & 2 Chronicles 14-16 Asa became the king of Judah during King Jeroboam of Israel’s 20th year. He was the king for 41 years. King Asa did what was right according to God! He removed all the idols from the land. He took down altars of idols, pillars, wood images and incense altars. He commanded the people to obey the law and commandments of God. He took away the queen title from his grandmother Maachah because she had an ‘obscene image of Asherah’ made. He cut down the idol and burned it by the Brook Kidron. Asa’s heart was loyal to God all of his days. King Asa of Judah and King Baasha of Israel had war between them all their life. King Baasha had Ramah built as a fortification. It was used to block access to Jerusalem and King Asa. Asa gathered together the gold and silver and sent his servants to Ben-Hadad. He was the King of Syria and lived in Damascus. The message asked for a treaty between Asa and Ben-Hadad. Asa asked him to break his treaty with King Baasha. King Ben-Hadad agreed and sent his army to attack cities in the tribe of Naphtali. When Baasha heard about the attacks, he stopped building at Ramah and stayed in Tirzah. King Asa made a proclamation throughout Judah and they took away the stones and lumber from Ramah. King Asa used the supplies to build Geba of Benjamin and Mizpah. He built fortified cities in Judah. There weren’t any wars during this time because God gave them rest. They built cities and walls around them with towers, gates and bars. They built and prospered. There were mighty warriors. Asa’s army from Judah had 300,000 men with shields and spears. There were 280,000 men from Benjamin that carried shields and bows. Asa had a severe disease in his foot during his 39th year of reign. He didn’t seek an answer from God, but from the doctors. He died during the 41st year of being king. 4. Jehoshaphat 1 Kings 15:24, 22:41-51, 2 Chronicles 17-20 When Asa died from old age, his son Jehoshaphat became the king. He became the king of Judah during the 4th year of King Ahab of Israel. Jehoshaphat was 35 when he became the king. He was a king for 25 years. He was like his father and did what was right in God’s sight. He removed the altars and wood images from Judah. He sent some Levites and priests through the cities in the land of Judah with the Book of the Law and they taught the people God’s laws. There was fear of the Lord in the land and the wars ceased. The kingdoms around Jehoshaphat brought him gifts and he became more powerful. There was a battle and Jehoshaphat told the people to believe in God and they would prosper. He chose men to go before the army singing and praising God. God set up ambushes to protect the people of Judah. When the people of Judah came to a place that overlooked the wilderness, they saw all their enemies that died. No one had escaped. They searched the bodies and took the valuables. They praised God on the fourth day for His protection. He also allied himself with the wicked king Ahaziah of Israel. Jehoshaphat built merchant ships to sail for gold. But the ships wrecked and didn’t sail because God didn’t like that Jehoshaphat associated with King Ahaziah of Israel. When Jehoshaphat died, his son Jehoram became the king. This fill-in-the-finger worksheet is available for Asa. The idea, instructions and answers were created by Christina Barkley and I recreated the worksheets with permission to share. This includes the hand that you see above (without logo) and a blank worksheet for students to draw their own hand. Although the answers may vary, a basic teacher's worksheet is included to show the students what to do. Click here to download. Lesson 4: Gentleness Story: King Rehoboam and the Division of the Kingdom of Israel Bible passages: 1 Kings 12:1-24 Introduction...
This Sunday we will be learning about King Jehoshaphat. I love being able to teach about GODLY KINGS. The KIDDOS are geuinely happy to FINALLY be learning about godly kings. After all NOT ONE King of Israel was godly..."NO NOT ONE." (Imagine small children saying those words....every time I ask if Israel had a godly king....that is how they answer me.) The KIDDOS will be able to answer all of these questions by the time we finish the lesson on King Jehoshaphat. I REALLY want the KIDDOS to understand the WHO? WHAT? WHEN? WHERE? WHERE? WHY? and HOW is this IMPORTANT to ME? (The purpose to the 2 WHERE questions.....I want the KIDDOS to know WHERE on a map the events happened. I also want the KIDDOS to know WHERE in the Bible they can find the story.) I have added several PICS to demonstrate our VISUAL AID for this lesson. If you follow me on Face Book you have already seen this...I am using a BREAD SLICER that I purchased at a Thrift Store for 99 Cents!!!! I am so excited about ALL the possible used for this BREAD SLICER. For this lesson we will REMOVE a CARD as we tell the story....SLOWLY revealing the card behind....As the story progresses I will have the KIDDOS take turns PULLING out the card to reveal the next card. I want to encourage Bible Class Teachers to "RETHINK" items. You just might find the perfect widget to fill a need....IF YOU OPEN YOUR MIND TO REUSING something for a NEW PURPOSE. We have TWO new words for our WORD WALL. We will be adding the word "ALLIED" and the word "FAST." I did not get a picture of the word "FAST." I have a hamburger with a red "NO" sign over it. We have a NEW place on our MAP. We have added Ramoth Gilead. Ramoth Gilead is an important city for King Jehoshaphat. He made a MISTAKE when he allied with Wicked King Ahab and went up to WAR in Ramoth Gilead. We will talk about Jehoshaphat's MISTAKE. I want to SHARE with you a PICTURE that shows HOW I display the past lessons EXPLORER JOURNAL ACTIVITY and MEMORY VERSES. I feel it is important to REVIEW PAST LESSONS the KIDDOS have learned...Having these activities and memory verses on display makes it EASY for me to BRING up past lessons we have learned. I love how our KINGS Bulletin Board is GROWING with information for the KIDDOS. You can see we learn about Three NEW Prophets with the lesson on Jehoshaphat. We have Micaiah---he technically belongs over in Israel with AHAB. But, we did not refer to him until this lesson. So, we are adding him now. We have Jehu and Jahaziel. Both of them went to Jehoshaphat. I decided this would be a WONDERFUL Memory Verse for the KIDDOS. This is what the people sang when they went out to defend Judah. GOD defeated their enemy for them. This verse comes directly from our lesson text. The TAKE HOME project this week is a REALLY SIMPLE project. We are making paper Bracelets. These are sooo simple. They are made from card stock. These are NOT fancy and NOT hard to make...they are assembled with TAPE. The KIDDOS are going to get to use MARKERS!! That will make these "extra special." PLEASE forgive the DOT on my hand. That is my BRAIN. You see, when I need to remember SOMETHING important, I put a DOT on my hand. :-) Our Review Game is Called "Change of Heart." After all Jehoshaphat had a change of heart, when he made a mistake--he REPENTED and turned back to GOD. This is HOW this game will be played. The KIDDOS will have a "POPPIN HEART," labeled with their name. This was the HARDEST picture to take!! It landed PERFECTLY!! They will get to 'set' the heart and place it on their choice of the three solid hearts. When the heart POPS up and lands in one of the hearts with questions...the KIDDOS will answer that question. I do have a few PINK hearts....they say "CHOOSE a Different Heart"...Sort of a Play on the idea that Jehoshaphat Changed His Heart. I purchased the "POPPIN HEARTS" during the VALENTINE season at Walmart. I knew then that I wanted to PUT those to use in a Review Game. Those RED HEART Containers came from Mardels. I bought them a few years ago. CAN you believe I got them for 39 cents a piece. I LOVE 90% off sales!!!!! These containers have SO many POSSIBILITIES! For now they serve a need to REVIEW the life of Jehoshaphat the King of Judah. :-) When you see the "EXPLORER JOURNAL" Activity for this lesson....You will see why I decided to go VERY simple with the "TAKE HOME" project for our lesson. :-) The KIDDOS will make their "EXPLORER JOURNAL" activity NEXT WEEK. Each of my lessons are designed for two weeks. The first week we LEARN the next week we REVIEW!! I love having that second week...it allows me to FILL in any missing information and correct any misunderstood information. The KIDDOS will be making these HEART SHAPED BOOKS for their EXPLORER JOURNALS. Since, these take a bit of work to assemble, I will do all of the assembling of the pages prior to class time. I do not want to waste any of our PRECIOUS BIBLE CLASS TIME on unnecessary TIME STEALERS!!! During class time the KIDDOS will color the words on the heart pages and attach all the stickers and 3D items. I copied the "pages" of the heart onto RED copy paper and folded them over a thin piece of cording. Once I had all the pages folded over their cords, I threaded them through a hole and tied them off on the back side of the PINK CARD STOCK. Then for added security I taped them to the back of the PINK Paper. I used a LOT of FOAMY STICKERS, Homemade Stickers (I LOVE having a sticker maker. It is a lifesaver when you cannot FIND the perfect stickers for your projects.) and Model Magic for the COMMANDMENTS!! BTW, I found these SWORD blades in a SET of VBS material sold at Hobby Lobby. This seems like a REALLY long post...but, it was so HARD to eliminate pictures...I really feel that PICTURES are worth a MILLION WORDS. I feel it is easier to SEE what I am doing in Bible Class!! Hope you feel this way too. Blessings, Ronda
