When our Sunday School Curriculum called for teaching the story of Acts 8:26-40, Philip witnessing to the Ethiopian, I knew we need a cool chariot craft. I consulted my 11 year old crafty son and this is what we created. The Sunday School kids (ages 6-7) loved it and the best part was that they were able to re-tell the entire story with the craft. You gotta love that! The key to crafting the chariot, is having the perfect yogurt container. FAGE yogurt cups come with 2 compartments. Perfect for 1 driver and the 2 riders. Here's the supplies we used: Here's a close up of the doll pins and doll pin stands. Find these in the wood section of the craft stores. You'll need 4 pins and 2 stands for EACH craft. Slide one large popsicle stick through the doll pin slat. Hot glue the bottom of the yogurt container to the stick. Place 2 pin stands to each end of the doll pin. These will be the wheels. (They won't turn like wheels, but they look cool and pull nicely.) Up to this point could all be done ahead of time for the kids. Cover the outside of the container with brown construction paper. We used glue sticks to adhere the paper. Next, dress the characters. Each child will need three doll pins. One for Philip, one for the Ethiopian and one for the Driver. Using felt scraps, cut out a 'shirt-like' looking piece with long sleeves. Simply tie the 'sleeves' around the 'neck' of the pins and make a knot. This makes an instant cape or robe. Using a marker, draw on eyes, mouth and hair. Now it's time to make the horse! Each child will need 2 brown pipe cleaners. Start with 1 pipe cleaner and shape the horse's head. Make a small point for the ear. Wrap the end of the pipe cleaner around the neck. The remainder of the pipe cleaner forms the back and tail. (Cut tail loop with scissors.) Double up the back with the leftover amount. Take another pipe cleaner and cut it in half. Use the half pieces to wrap on some legs. Hot glue (or use glue dots) to adhere the hind legs to the end of the popsicle stick that is glued onto the yogurt container. Hold the hind legs in place with a clothespin. This makes it easy to pull as well. The front legs stay out in front to balance the horse. And now you have all the pieces for the story. We used blue felt for the water. In the Bible story, the Ethiopian has the driver stop by the water so Philip can baptize him. Re-enact the story with the characters. You know it's a great craft when the kids want to re-tell and re-tell the story over and over. Come to think of it...that's exactly what we are called to do... Tell the story of Christ over and over so others will know the truth and believe. ! "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matt. 28:19-20. Want to see some more of my Sunday School Crafts?
