Free picture book companion. I use this set of cards with the picture book, Elephants Swim. It’s a very simple text. Each page of the book shows an animal and how it behaves in or near water. I use the animal names (nouns) and the verbs to orally question my beginning ELL students. I will ask questions like, “Is the elephant using its trunk to swim?”, or “Does the kangaroo swim?” My purpose is to get the kids to respond in a whole sentence orally because on the new ELL testing, kids are asked to explain what they see on computer screens by microphone. This could just as easily be a springboard for interactive and independent writing for science reports.
