This work represents Henri d'Artois, Duke of Bordeaux, better known under the title of Count of Chambord, also pretender to the throne of France under the title of Henri V in the 19th century. This prince is the famous "miracle child", son of the Duke of Berry and grandson of Charles X. He was born in 1820 after the assassination of his father, while the Duchess of Berry was already pregnant. The Count of Chambord was the legitimist pretender who opposed the party of Orleans. He lived in exile from 1830 to 1871 and remains in history for having refused the Restoration which was proposed to him in 1873 because of his attachment to the white flag and his refusal of the tricolor flag. Bust of royalist propaganda at the time, the Count of Chambord is represented with a drape on a pedestal decorated with a royalist coat of arms of France. Putting all at risk in a great game of power Princess Marie Caroline married King Louis the Eighteenth of France's nephew-the Duke of Berri (or Berry) shortly after the final defeat of Napoleon and the second restoration of the Bourbon monarchy. Widowed by assassination in 1820 she became a leading figure in the Bourbon court, but had to flee the country in 1830 when Louis's successor-and her father-in-law, Charles the Tenth-was deposed during the July Revolution. The red-haired duchess was never one to take such a set-back lying down and she determined to promote a popular uprising which would topple the Orleanist dynasty and restore the 'legitimate' Bourbon one of which she was a pivotal component. She returned to France in secret to lead an uprising in the Vendee which soon turned sour leaving her a fugitive running for her life. This is the story of a remarkable and strong willed woman who attempted nothing less than the overthrow of a kingdom.

This splendid French Empire ormolu mantel clock features an extraordinarily detailed scene of the Duchess du Berry and her children, an intimate scene often referred to as "The Evening Prayer." Crafted by master bronzier Jean-André Reiche, this magnificent clock epitomizes Neoclassical refinement and luxury that defined the aristocratic tastes of the Empire period. Rendered in exquisite lifelike detail, the Duchess du Berry nurses a young boy while her daughter kneels for her evening prayers. The boy will eventually become the Duke du Bordeaux, and this spectacular clock was made on the occasion of his miraculous birth, after the assassination of his father on the steps of the Paris Opera House. These important figures are enshrined in fine Empire furniture and architectural details, such as the Duchess' griffin motif armchair and the grand sweep of curtains behind them. Reiche's exemplary ormolu work encases a beautiful pendulum clock that retains its original French movement. The white enameled dial is signed by Julien Beliard, a prominent Parisian clockmaker of the late Empire period.
