The ruins of Okehampton Castle, gilded by early morning spring sunshine, are framed by leafy trees. The Norman motte and bailey style castle, once the largest in Devon, was built shortly after the Norman conquest between 1068 and 1086. It was altered from a fortification and converted to a hunting lodge and deer park by the Courtenay family in the thirteenth century. It fell into disrepair following the execution of Henry Courtenay, the last heir, by King Henry VIII in 1539. Okehampton is on the edge of Dartmoor at the junction of the West and East Okement rivers in West Devon, SW England, UK.
