This Alice's Adventures in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass (Complete Boxed Set of 2 Books) written by Lewis Carroll were published in 1946 by Random House - they are 1st Special Edition/1st Printing with the original slipcase and are in excellent condition. Illustrated by John Tenniel, and tinted by Fritz Kredel, they are THE classic favourites, sure to delight a new reader of Alice or the collector of classic literature. The boxed set measures approximately 8.75 x 5.25 x 1.75". It appears that these have never been read - they are bright, tight, clean and crisp - minimal bumping, with board edges straight and corners square, impeccably clean. They have, however, the name of the previous lucky recipient written neatly on the interiors. The slipcase is also in wonderful condition and has done its job in keeping the books safe and secure. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland And Through The Looking Glass Box Set By Lewis Carrol Random House Copyright 1946
I´m not dead yet. This time I have german issue of Alice in Wonderland, published by Basserman (random House) Munich, and beautifully illustrated by Eric Kincaid (NOT in any relation to Thomas Kinkade, I was always confusing their names...). Alice shrinks after drinking from the bottle. This version of Alice is clearly inspired by Carrolls photographs of the real Alice Liddell. Eating the cake... ...and growing huge. I love how grotesquely disorted Alice looks during the growth. Giant Alice encounters the Rabbit and shrinks after using the fan. The White Rabbit chases Alice to fetch his stuff. She is tiny compared to him! Alice big in the White Rabbits house. Alice kicks Bill so hard that she wrecks the chimney. Alice vs. the Puppy. Doin´ shrooms. Alice and the house of the dutchess. Alice growing in the courtroom. Alice stands up to the King and Queen of hearts. She is massive compared to them. This pic is clearly based on a Carroll photography. All in all a very cute version of the book. The german translation is a bit weird at times, but the illustrations are quite lovely.

Sir John Tenniel's illustrations for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass are considered to be his finest and most enduring achievement. They must also rank among the world's best-known children's images. The Dalziel brothers were commissioned to engrave the boxwood blocks on which Tenniel had made his drawings. The engravers advised Lewis Carroll that the engraved blocks should not be used for printing the illustrations in the books but instead they would act as the masters from which electrotype copies would be made. It was from these electrotypes that all the illustrations in the Alice books were printed with a resultant loss of definition. In 1985 the original wood engraved blocks were discovered in deed boxes belonging to Macmillan, the original publishers. Jonathan Stephenson at the Rocket Press was awarded the prestigious job of printing 250 sets from the blocks (the first time that they had been used) for worldwide distribution. No further sets will be printed.
