STUNNING Furniture Fix Up of a 1930's Dresser! | STUNNING Furniture Fix Up of a 1930's Dresser! | By Salvaged by k. scott | The style of this sweet little dresser with its boxy frame and dainty turned legs tells me that it's a classic depression era piece from the late 1920s or early 19thirties. And boy has this piece seen some things. Structurally it was in perfectly sound condition but there was a ton of missing veneer and what was still attached was barely hanging on. A lot of the finish was worn away from the top and the legs as well and it was just time for a new look. I carefully unscrewed the bolts holding the mirror and set it aside then just follow the screws along the back to remove the harp as well and I'll be replacing these broken wooden knobs with some new ones that still fit with the age of the piece. Since so much of this veneer was already missing and the rest was letting go. I decided to just bite the bullet and remove it all. So I pried off what was loose with my painter's tool and then used a wet rag and an old iron to steam the areas that were still adhered and caused the old hide glue to break down. Once I had all that mess out of the way, I popped some 180 grit sandpaper onto my sander and got started smoothing out the rough glue residue and the construction grade lumber that was underneath there. When that was done, I continued sanding the rest of the dresser to remove any flaking and failing finish and scuff up the rest so that my primer would have a little bit of texture to hold onto. I wiped the body of the dresser down with a clean microfiber cloth to grab all the extra dust off the surface but I still needed to sand the mirror frame and the harp. Fun fact on a lot of newer antique and vintage furniture, you can actually find a manufacturing date stamped on the back of the glass. I used a flat head screwdriver and some needle nose pliers to remove the staples from this cardboard backer as carefully as I could. 1931, look at that. I stuck a bit of masking tape on the glass to protect it and then used a sanding block to gently scuff up the frame. I rolled on a coat of primer over the whole exterior which highlighted a few more flaws. Those got filled in with some wood filler and then I added on a coat of primer to seal them in. Once that was dry enough, I smoothed it out with some fine 400 grit sandpaper, wiped off the dust again, and popped the drawers back into their spots before straining some of this fusion mineral paint in their color coal black into my pneumatic sprayer. I added about half of the pint of paint and then about two tablespoons of water which I've been finding really helps level out the paint a little bit better when I'm spraying it. To paint all the way around the spindles on the harp, I popped an old coat hanger that was all stretched out over our garage door track then hung the harp on it through one of the screw holes. This way I could paint at any angle and not have to worry about it touching anything while it dried. About two hours after I'd sprayed on my first coat I gave it all another really light wipe down with my 400 grit and then a microfiber cloth to keep it smooth and sprayed on my second coat which is typically all I need to do. With a couple of screwdrivers I was able to pull the drawers back out and get around the edges with a little brush. To top coat this piece and add another layer of protection with a little bit more sheen. I stirred up a can of water based polyure and then poured some into a separate container and mixed in a tiny bit of my paint. It's pretty hard to get a consistent finish with poly over darker colors like this. It almost always looks cloudy or streaky so tinting it like this can really help avoid that. While the poly was drying, I sprayed the casters down with some WD 40 and scrubbed off as much of the surface rust as I could with a wire brush and the next morning, once the top coat was fully dry, I laid the dresser on its back so I could pop them back in and also touch up the bottom edges that the sprayer catch. I rubbed a bit of beeswax furniture salve on the tracks on the inside of the dresser and the bottom edges of the drawers to lubricate them and keep everything sliding nicely and conditioned all of the dried out old wood on the insides of the drawers with that as well. These new knobs that I found on Amazon match the little flower detail on the top of the mirror perfectly. They're definitely period appropriate for this piece too and add a great touch of brass. Okay, time for before and afters. Here is the dresser that was dropped off to me for some love and here is the fixed up version that I created. I think this black finish is timeless and makes this piece really versatile in a modern home. I picture it sitting in someone's entry way as a piece to fix their hair on the way at the door in the morning and then catch their keys on the way back home at the end of the day.
