Spokane Bon Marche, Spokane c.1960
It was impressive to find a six-story downtown department store in a city the size of Spokane. The old Bon Marche (owned by Federated Department Stores) purchased Culbertson, Grote, Rankin Company and transformed it into a branch of the Seattle-based department store. After Federated acquired Macy's, they hyphenated the name to Bon-Macy's, and eventually must Macy's after Federated purchased May Department Stores in 2006.

A directory of the now-closed University City Shopping Center in Spokane, Washington in 1982. This mall dates backs to the 1960s and was the first enclosed mall in Spokane. U-City eventually collapsed in the 1990s from a number of factors such as the 1991 expansion of NorthTown Mall, the arrival of many new big-box retailers, and the loss of JCPenney and several other tenants to the new Spokane Valley Mall in 1997. There were proposals to expand U-City, but nothing ever happened, and rumors of Target and The Bon Marché joining the mall never materialized as both built elsewhere. It was Penney's departure that killed any future attempts to keep the mall open. It was closed by 2000 and eventually demolished (only the JCPenney & Crescent buildings remain). Today, an open-air shopping center takes up most of the former mall site.
Then & Now: The sturdy brick buildings from the first half of the 20th century are reminders that Spokane has always been a regional business center, a place where ambitious business operators came to stake their claim and make a fortune or go bust. This is photographic look back at some of the buildings in downtown Spokane, how they looked then and how they look now.
One recent winter day, Patty Kilcup, 63, and Deb Green, 49, sat in Green’s restaurant, Madeleine’s Café and Patisserie, and reminisced. The women, business acquaintances now, didn’t know each other as children, but both experienced nearly identical holiday season rituals.

For the sharp dressed man! A black Fedora hat in the original box. From The Bon Marche in Spokane, WA. Marked "Dobbs Game Bird". Size 6 7/8. Condition is very good. This is a classic that can be worn year after year. Brims measure: 11" x 9.75".

This listing just makes me smile. A group of seven old merchandise bags from various stores. Knowing where I got them I am reasonably sure these are 1950s. A "Snack Attack" Sure Fine grocery sack, Woolworths, a local Tacoma WA Ludwig's Pharmacy, The Crescent Department Store in Spokane Washington, True Value, Sears (this one has been cut to lie flat) and an old Bon Marche with the flower logo. Fun for a collection, to use as a display or as part of a mixed media project. Use as your own gift wrap! Sizes vary of course from the standard size paper bag grocery store size to the larger Crescent and Sears bags. The others are smaller all about 9" x 12". All have been used, the Sears bag may have been trimmed some but the advertising and printed parts could still be used. I aired these for a year or so and there is very, very little smell left. You have to sniff close to catch anything. There is typical vintage wear to used paper bags, wrinkles, maybe worn corners, some fading, etc. but not serious tears or holes other than the Sears bag.
