Green Painted Dresser Makeover That Will Turn Heads

HIGH GLOSS Furniture Makeover | HIGH GLOSS Furniture Makeover | By Salvaged by k. scott | I have been wanting to try painting a piece of furniture in a high-gloss finish for a long time but I've been too intimidated to try. This week, I picked up a can of Benmore Advanced in their high-gloss finish to experiment with and we'll see how it goes. I also grabbed this table from the thrift store for $10. It's a mix of particle board and oak veneer with some brown paint on the top that I can only assume is covering a bit of damage but I think it's a great size to play around with this new to me paint on. It's really important to clean your surfaces prior to painting to get any dirt and grime off of the surface but also remove any old furniture polish residue that can build up over the years. A lot of those products have oils and silicones in them that can create a barrier and even straight up repel a new finish from sticking. The paint that was on the top of this was pretty chunky. Full of brush strokes and even a few bristles in there so I needed to get it off. I took a few swipes at it with my carbide scraper first to get most of it out of the way and then use my sander to clean off the rest. Before I scuffed up the rest of the slick finish, I needed to make a few minor repairs so I mixed up some bondo to fill those in then sanded them flush to the surface around and proceeded just taking the sheen off of the rest of the piece so that my new finish would be able to make a good bond. You don't necessarily need to prime with the paint that I'll be using but this layer is going to seal in any wood tannins or the natural oils that are in the bare wood that might bleed up and show through my new finish. It's also going to seal up all of the different textures that I have going on with the bare wood, the original finished wood and the wood filler so that the paint will sit evenly and look the same across all those different textures. When my first coat of primer was dry, I used some of this Bondo Spot Putty and an old gift card to fill in all of the really deep wood grain texture, sanded that smooth, and rolled on a second coat of primer to seal it all in. By this point I was ready to start painting so I poured some of the advanced through a strainer into my gravity fed HVLP pneumatic sprayer. Tested out the sprayings on a piece of cardboard and once I was happy with how the paint was flowing I applied my first coat to the table. This paint has a very long recoat time of 16 hours in between layers. So once I was finished with the first one I cleaned out my gun and called it a day. The next morning I carefully sanded over each surface again with some fine sandpaper to smooth out texture or dust that had landed in the paint as it dried, cleaned all of that off with a mix of alcohol and water and a microfiber cloth and sprayed on my second coat. At the very end of the day, once that dry time had passed again, I thought it needed one more smooth out in a few spots and another layer of color to fill in some lighter patches. So again, I sanded with my fine grit, cleaned, and sprayed on what ended up being my final coat. I brightened up the tarnished poles and hinges with a misting of some fresh gold spray paint and once everything had cured, I reassembled my stunningly glossy little table. This piece is definitely far from perfect but the whole point just to practice and test out a paint and sheen that I've never used before. I'm extremely happy with the results I was able to achieve and now I've got a better grasp on what I can do differently to get an even better mirror-like finish the next time.
