Map of China
Mapping Media in China is the first book-length study that goes below the 'national' scale to focus on the rich diversity of media in China from local, provincial and regional angles. China's media has played a crucial role in shaping and directing the country's social and cultural changes, and whilst these shifts have often been discussed as a single and coherent phenomenon, this ignores the vast array of local and regional variations within the country's borders. This book explores media as both a reflection of the diversity within China and as an active agent behind these growing differences. It examines the role of media in shaping regional, provincial and local identities through the prism of media economics and technology, media practices, audiences, as well as media discourses. The book covers a wide range of themes, including civil society, political resistance, state power and the production and consumption of place-specific memory and imagination. With contributions from around the world, including original ethnographic material from scholars based in China, Mapping Media in China is an original book which spans a broad range of disciplines. It will be invaluable to both students and scholars of Chinese and Asian studies, media and communication studies, geography, anthropology and cultural studies.

China is a large country with a vast stretch of land and economic development varies widely by regions, and there is a huge difference in industrial structure between inland provinces and southeast coastal regions. How to correctly identify the distribution of key industries across the Mainland China in Chinese economy is an important topic for investors and economic researchers both in and outside China. By adoption of 133 data maps, China Economy Atlas presents a clear picture on the distribution of key industries in Chinese economy across different regions of Mainland China. The book gives an introduction to each industry with an individual data map and messages as well as charts. For the first time, China Economy Atlas adopts the International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities issued by the United Nation and classifies all economic activities into 133 major sectors, according with the reading habits of international readers. The combination of data maps, text messages and chart analysis enables the book to present a clear picture on the distribution of all segmented major sectors across provincial regions in Mainland China, telling the differences in industrial structure across different regions and highlighting hot places for relevant major sectors. In terms of the analysis method, by introduction of the economic distribution index of industries across China, China Economy Atlas provides readers with a quantitative and direct as well as reliable reference based on a composite weighted calculation of the distribution of major sectors with the three key indicators such as the number of enterprises, their business revenue and profits by region and by business type.

Dr Vermeer's study of the economic development on Central Shaanxi province from 1930 until 1988, when this was first published, illustrates the effects of famine, war and construction under Chinese communism. It focuses in particular on the organisational and technical potential of agriculture and industry to make use of the natural advantages of the region. Modernisation in Shaanxi was brought in from outside, with a dominant role for government institutions, and rapidly transformed the face of country and city. The book portrays the growing pains of a frontier economy, examining such crucial natural barriers to agricultural expansion as lack of irrigation water. It describes the technological advances, using clear maps to illustrate the development of transport, population distribution, soils, irrigation projects and cropping patterns. The extensive economy survey of counties in hill and plain areas, based on data from local government and the author's own observations, reveals great regional differences.
