What might life be like on another planet? We start by learning about astronomers’ discovery of exoplanets, which are planets that revolve around stars other than the Sun. Then we move into the fantasy world, imagining what kinds of plants, houses, weather, and vehicles we want for our exoplanet faraway in space. Creativity’s encouraged! A great informational text to go with this project is Just Right: Searching for the Goldilocks Planet by Curtis Manley and Jessica Lanan. This award-winning book tells the story of a girl and her family's visit to a planetarium and it's "Searching for Exoplanets" exhibit. Supplies needed are black permanent markers, fluorescent or regular oil pastels, and watercolors. The kids really get into these, and I love how unique each of their paintings is. Time Required: 1½-2 hours.
