A tranquil, sheltered cove called Stoth on the road up to the lighthouse at the Butt of Lewis.on the Isle of Lewis Taken on a bright 17th May 2010. Although time constraints meant it had to be a mid-day shot - meaning that it is not as interesting a composition as it could have been - it at least reveals the incredible rock formations and the crystal clear turquoise waters. I was obligated to adjust shadows and highlights a little in Photoshop to compensate for the mid-day sun and the subsequent shadows. The Butt of Lewis is about as far north as you can go in the Western Isles, and overlooks the Atlantic ocean. The north tip of the Isle is regarded as the windiest place in the UK. West from this point there is nothing between you and North America. North from this point there is nothing between you and the Arctic. The Butt of Lewis itself comprises sea stacks and spectacular rocks and cliffs that provide a perfect home for many seabirds. According to Wikipedia, The Butt of Lewis (Rubha Robhanais) is in the area of Ness. It is the northernmost point of the Isle of Lewis. It is the location for an unmanned 121 foot high lighthouse built in the 1860s and designed by David Stevenson. There is a large round hole in the cliff to the west of the lighthouse which is called the Eye of the Butt (Scottish Gaelic: Sùil an Rubha), which is most clearly visible from the Habost machair.
