This is the Nangol or "land diving" ceremony which takes place in the southern part of Pentecost Island, Vanuatu. One purpose of the ceremony is to insure a good yam harvest. This man is jumping from this 80 foot tower head first towards the ground with carefully selected lianus vines tied to his ankles. The elastic vines are just long enough that his head will brush the earth before he springs back. The people from this village have eschewed colonial and christian ways in favor of their tradition or "kastom".
