Our VBS this year was Lifting Up the King. We studied some great kings of the Bible: David, Solomon, Josiah and Jesus. Jesus being the greatest King of all. This is the first night's study of King David: A Man After God's own Heart found in Acts 13:22. The theme was Heart Like God. I decorated each wall for a different person. I planned to make each wall a throne room, but as I worked on them, I only made David and Solomon in a throne room. Click here to download the kings graphics. I made 2 different banners for each person. These are close-ups before they were attached to the dowel rods. I used poster board, but you can use felt, fabric, bulletin board paper, etc. I painted the designs, but you could use markers, chalk, etc. Then I added jewels for sparkle for VBS. Click here to see more with the free templates (plain and mine). For our VBS lessons, I taught a brief overview of each king's life. Some of the facts are to help students remember (or learn) some of the basics of their life, and part of the discussion is to learn why they were great kings. For David, we discussed Goliath and some of David's traits before and after he was the king. I used these visuals on the back of the door so I could use them for reference teaching David & Solomon. I made the title using an overhead projector to enlarge my graphic onto poster board and then painting it. After the red paint was dry for the lettering, I added Glitter Glue and once it is dry, it makes this great shiny glittery effect! The jewels were added last. I had the kings posters printed on bigger computer paper (10x13?) and laminated them. You can download title templates and the kings posters here. Application Game: Paulette creates with the games and this was fun! I printed 2 of the Goliaths. We divided the kids up into 2 groups and when they knocked Goliath down, everyone shouted "The battle is the Lord's!" I took a close-up of the slingshot that Bill made for us (you need 2). I don't have directions, but it seems doable by looking at the photo. The blue and green slingshots were purchased art Target. Another way to reinforce: 'Aim to be like David: With a Heart Like God'. Use different words that are what God wants us to be like. Use a slingshot to throw the marshmallows at Goliath. Download the Goliaths here. From a previous post, I made these for a take home. I used blue felt and laid the smooth stones in the 'brook'. They picked up their 5 smooth stones like David. Download the template for the slingshots here. I used these Magnetic Board Visuals for VBS. I wanted something different and they hold the student's interest. To use these, print (on cardstock if possible), cut out, laminate and add magnets on the back. As you are teaching the lesson, you just add the numbered graphic. Click here to download these visuals. Our VBS for 2016 is Lifting Up the King. We studied great kings of the Bible. Day 2 was Solomon: The Wisest Man found in 1 Kings 4:30. The theme was Mind of Wisdom. I decorated each wall for a different person. I planned to make each wall a throne room, but as I worked on them, I only made David and Solomon in a throne room. Click here to download the kings graphics. I made 2 different banners for each person. These are close-ups before they were attached to the dowel rods. Some of the facts are to help students remember (or learn) some of the basics of their life, and part of the discussion is to learn why they were great kings. Solomon is so interesting! We learned about God giving him wisdom and Solomon with his judgement of the two women. We also briefly discussed the temple and why he was a great king. There are three of us that work together for VBS for this age group. While I taught the lesson, we had these two babies. When one died, it was put to the side. Then, they went to see King Solomon... They (the two mothers) started to 'argue' about the baby to me (King Solomon). That made it ... interesting! Then I drew out the sword and waved it around and the kids loved it! But these are a simple cheap visual to use. I had the kings posters printed on 10x13 paper and laminated them. You can download title templates and the kings posters here. Another poster for Solomon! Click here to download. Application Game: Everyone sat in a circle and Paulette tossed a light up ball to one student at a time. She asked a question starting with "Is it wise to..." and they answered and that created conversations about what is wise. The questions could be right vs. wrong in God's eyes, or their parents eyes. It could be wise vs. smart. Here are some of the questions. Some were made up on the spot, depending on the other conversations and students and I was not able to write them down. Is it wise to: 1. go outside in the snow without winter coat on? 2. use somebody else's' dirty tissue? 3. use the bathroom and not wash your hands? 4. catch a bumblebee in your hands? 5. eat worms? 6. not brush your teeth while you are on vacation? 7. only be nice to your friends on Saturday? 8. let your puppy drink from your glass of water? 9. go for a walk in the woods without your shoes on? 10. go swimming without your mom and dad (or another grown up)? 11. only eat cookies? 12. obey parents? 13. go to worship instead of a baseball game? 14. be nice to everyone? 15. love God? 16. obey God? 17. read your Bible? Or, listen when the Bible is being read to you? I used these Magnetic Board Visuals for VBS. I wanted something different and they hold the student's interest. Our VBS for 2016 is Lifting Up the King. We studied great kings of the Bible. Day 3 was Josiah: Faithful to God and was taken from 2 Kings 23:25. The theme was his obedient actions. I decorated each wall for a different person. I planned to make each wall a throne room, but as I worked on them, I changed my mind. Josiah needed to be outside by the pillars of the temple. (2 Kings 23:1-3). You can download the basic temple outline here. There is so much for the decorating this year, I tried to add something different to each day's post. This is the corner tent area. I wanted this to look like a throne area. I covered it with bulletin board paper and added these purple plastic table covers to look like curtains. You can find the directions and more for the throne here. I added this banner and wood chair. I added a scepter and crown to complete the look. For Josiah, I decided to use this super easy to understand chart to explain the kings from Solomon to Josiah. I began the lesson with a general review about David and Solomon, then used this chart. I mentioned Solomon's son as the next king, but issues created a Divided Kingdom. So, where Saul, David and Solomon were the first kings of Israel, Josiah was a king of Judah 15 kings later, with one of those being a queen. Click here to download this chart. For our VBS lessons, I taught a brief overview of each king's life. Some of the facts are to help students remember (or learn) some of the basics of their life, and part of the discussion is to learn why they were great kings. Since there isn't too much about Josiah, we discussed him becoming a king and how he felt when the scroll was found. We completed the lesson with why Josiah was a great king. Is it in the Bible Application Game: For this lesson, Paulette decided to do a Bible review. Since Josiah was upset when they found the scroll and they were not obeying God's laws, she used the above Bible box (see how to make one here). Or, you can certainly use a box or basket. She had pieces of paper inside that either had things that are in the Bible (scriptures) or not in the Bible. The kids read the strip they picked out of the box and told us if it was found in the Bible or not. Click here to print the strips that Paulette used. I used these Magnetic Board Visuals for VBS. I wanted something different and they hold the student's interest. To use these, print (on cardstock if possible), cut out, laminate and add magnets on the back. Our VBS this year is Lifting Up the King. We will study some great kings of the Bible: David, Solomon, Josiah and Jesus. Jesus being the greatest King of all. This post includes the banners (flags) I created for our classroom. I basically wanted the classroom to feel like a throne room. I put a king on each wall, which you will see in the posts that follow. But, these banners and the directions will take up too much space to post for each king. You can download each blank template for the banner you prefer. Click on the banner you want to enlarge it and right click copy or save. Paste to your preferred document to add your text or graphics. I debated how to create these, but ended up using a sheet of poster board per banner. I didn't cut the sides at all, just the design at the bottom and top. I decided to paint each banner, because that is the look I wanted. You could use felt or fabric. You can use bulletin board paper, but I wanted mine to hang flat and thought the designed edges would curl and get on my nerves. You can also use a machine to cut out your letters. Anyway, there are so many ways to make these! These are two different banners, one I used a stamp pad to make the antique look and the other is painted grey. All the banners in this post are flat without the dowel rod to hang them. You can see the finished banners on each post. The top flaps will be nailed to a dowel rod with ends attached to finish it off. I used colored cord to hang each banner. I purchased these larger jewels to bling the banners. The above are the ones I created for our VBS theme. I used one on the door and one in a corner to cover a tent I have in my room. You can click here to download the same banners I created. For this post, I have photos of the flat (not on dowel rods yet) banners for each day. Then you will see the blank banners. You can right click and save or copy & paste. All the black & white banners are the blank templates that you can use to create your own look. The right banner is plain without a design, which I didn't use. Day 1: King David Day 2: King Solomon Day 3: King Josiah Day 4: Jesus, The King of Kings This is how we made the poles and attached the banners. We purchased 1/2" dowel rods. Depending on the width of your banners, leave enough on each side to add the wood ends to finish them off. We used these on the two main theme banners. And, these were cheaper, so I used these on all the others. I also used this craft cord to hang them. Click here to download the banners I created. We used a staple gun to attach the flaps at the top to the dowel rod, then turned it so the ends were on the back of the banner. We hammered these tacks found in the fabric upholstery isle to the end flaps to keep it turned how I wanted it. Note: If you use hard wood dowel rods, it is harder to hammer the tacks... oops. Here are a couple bonus templates!

This year our VBS was Lifting Up the King. We originally discussed Great Kings of the Bible: David, Solomon, Josiah and Jesus the most important of all. Lifting Up the King is Great Oak's theme for this year, so we continued it with VBS. Thanks to Kelly and Donna! This is the front door entryway. These two pictures show outside Solomon's Temple. These photos are the foyer and are Solomon's Temple. Solomon's throne in the foyer. The sign-in area in the foyer. The auditorium. Sorry, I don't know who to credit for these decorations. Close up of the throne. Close-up of right side of auditorium. Close-up of left side of auditorium. As you walk through the foyer through the hall to the classrooms, there is this small vestibule. This was decorated as bedding in David's kingdom. David's kingdom Close-ups From the vestibule to the hallway, this was decorated as a full size Triumphal Entry. The people and buildings are shadows. The people are lined up on each side with the palm leaves spread all over. There are candles in the windows of the buildings and were on timers that came on and turned off themselves during VBS. You can see from the Triumphal Entry hallway, this shadow of Jesus and His disciples. It was dark in this hallway and there was a light focused on this from behind. This is another hallway that was decorated for Jesus. Kelly and her daughters had fun tie-dying this sheet to create this awesome finished look. Once the tie-dye was dry, they just painted the rest in black paint. It looked incredible! This is the puppet room where the kids also had their snacks. They are given time to eat, then they get to enjoy more Bible learning. I don't know who to give credit for these walls, but they looked great and perfect for this area. Thanks to Kelly for permission to photograph her and Donna's decorations so I could share them with you! Day 1 King David Day 2 King Solomon Day 3 King Josiah Day 4 Jesus: King of King

To use these, print (on cardstock if possible), cut out, laminate and add magnets on the back. As you are teaching the lesson, you just add the numbered graphic. Click here to download these visuals.
