The Cŵn Annwn are the spectral hounds of Annwn, the otherworld of Welsh mythology. They are associated with the Wild Hunt presided over by Gwyn ap Nudd. Christians have dubbed them The Hounds of Hell and theorised that they are therefore owned by Satan. It should be noted however that the Annwn of medieval Welsh tradition is an otherworldly paradise and not a hell or abode of dead souls. They are also regarded as the escorts of souls on their journey to the Otherworld, and are to be seen at dusk hunting singularly or in packs of three six or nine. All black or all white in colour with ears quite rose red inside they are known to haunt lonely mountain roads and forest glades. Their howl is said to be loudest when they are furthest away becoming faint and distant the closer they approach.
