It's the Eleventh Day of Christmas, and for today's free pattern we have Elizabeth here to show us how to make a perfect Soup Bowl Cozy! Isn't it pretty?! I am super excited about this pattern! The bowl cozy will protect your counter tops, hands, and even lap from the heat of the bowl, while also looking and feeling super... cozy! (Plus, I have no doubt mine will double as an Ice Cream Cozy. I think my parents are going to need these for Christmas! Sshh.) Anyway, Elizabeth made the instructions super easy to understand, with step-by-step photos. You will soon be all ready to make the perfect cozy, or set of cozies, in no time! Here's Elizabeth with the free pattern: Items you will need: 1/2 yard cotton batting 1/3 yard cotton fabric scissors pins ruler/measuring tape Important Note: Be sure to use 100% cotton for all your supplies (fabric, batting, and thread) so it will be heat-safe! Polyester blends may melt or put off dangerous fumes when they're heated. First, cut your fabric and batting into 10" squares. Cut 2 squares of fabric and 2 of batting. Your pile should look like the photo above when you're done. Pin one of your batting pieces to the wrong side of one of your fabric pieces. You will then draw a line from one corner to the other, and then repeat with the other side to make an X. Then sew directly on top of the lines you drew, as shown in red in the photo above. Repeat with the remaining batting and fabric pieces. You will now be creating the folds that will form the shape of the bowl. First, fold one of your squares in half, with right sides together. Then starting at the top of the fold, measure 1” across the top from the fold as shown in the first photo, and mark that spot. Then measure 2” down the fold, as shown in the second photo above, and mark that spot. Draw a line connecting the two points and then sew directly on top of the line, as shown above in red. Then trim down to 1/8” from the stitching, to reduce bulk. Do the same on the other fold-corner. Then open the square up and fold it the other direction. Repeat the above steps so you have four folds that are measured, sewn, and trimmed on your first square. Repeat the same steps with the second square. Once you have completed that step, open up your soup bowl holder so that you have one right side out and one that is inside out, as shown above. Place one of your soup bowl layers on top of the other with right sides together, as shown above. Pin in place and then sew along the top edges of the bowl cozy using a 1/4" seam allowance, and be sure to leave a 3” opening for turning. Flip the soup bowl cozy so it is right side out, using the 3" opening. Fold in the raw edge that was left open before and pin it closed. Topstitch 1/8” from the edges all the way around the cozy. This will close the hole and give it a nice look all around. You are now finished! All that is left to do is place your bowl in the cozy and enjoy! We hope you liked our free tutorial!
