Did you know? Blueberries can improve memory! Welcome to the watercolor series in “Sketch On Saturday” everyone. Today I have blueberries for you all. This is one of my favorite fruits and a staple in the fridge. And with all the health benefits associated with it, it tastes even better! All the materials required for the “Fruits” series can be seen HERE. The watercolors I used in this sketch are: 1. Indigo blue2. Cadmium red3. Yellow ochre4. Burnt sienna Before we start painting, it is important to understand the subject first. So I made this break up for you. Take a close look and understand the tonal values in the reference image. The light source is on the left, hence we will keep the right side darker (in individual berries) throughout the shading process. The initial drawing is done using a 2B pencil. Since the berries are very dark in color, we can keep the drawing a bit darker. So let’s begin the fun! Step1: Start with a wash of clear water on all the berries. This prepares the sheet for the paint. I am using a number 5 brush here. Step2: Now, give a very light wash of indigo blue, keeping the overall tonal breakup in mind. Tip: Keep the brightest areas (highlights) as it is for now! Step3: Repeat with another wash of indigo blue over the first one. Do not worry, by the time you move to the berry on the far right, the berries on the left must have dried a bit. Hence, we can layer it up without making it look muddy. Step4: If we look at the blueberries carefully we see a purplish tint in the color. They are not pure blue. Hence mix a very little amount of cadmium red to indigo blue and viola you have a purple color. Give your berries a wash of purple now. I am still using the number 5 brush. Important: Let it dry completely before proceeding to the next step. Step5: Now the surface is ready for the detail work. With a thicker consistency of indigo blue paint some details on the surface. Use a number 3 brush for this step. Pay close attention to the reference image. Look for surface markings and other details. Keep the tonal values in mind with each step. Important: Let it dry completely before proceeding to the next step. If we don’t wait for it to dry here, all the details will be lost! Step6: Now give the berries a light wash of purple using a number 5 brush. Do this very gently as if not touching the details beneath. Step7: It is time to paint the small yellowish details we see at the top of the berries using a number 0 brush. Mix a little amount of burnt sienna in yellow ochre and you get a darker shade of yellow for the details. Paint as shown below. Step8: Now just repeat the whole process of painting details and giving a wash as required, until you end up with the right saturation of color. The more time you devote on layers, the more realistic the berries will look. The berries will look somewhat like this in the end. I truly enjoyed painting these beautiful blueberries. I hope you try them at home as well. Let me know if you have any doubts related to the process. I will surely come back to you! Till then enjoy painting! BEWARE: You might end up eating a few while painting. Oops! I am telling you from my experience. Keep a few extras in handy. They are hard to resist.
