As described in Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Ujjayi Pranayama is also called the psychic breath. As explained in (Verses 51-53) in English: “Closing the mouth, inhale with control and concentration through ida and pingala, so that the breath is felt from the throat to the heart and produces a sonorous sound. Do kumbhaka as before and exhale through ida. This removes phlegm from the throat and stimulates the digestive fire. This pranayama, called ujjayi, can be done while moving, standing, sitting, or walking. It removes dropsy and disorders of the nadis and dhatu.” Further described in Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Ujjayi means ‘victorious;’ ujji is the root which means ‘to conquer’ or ‘acquire by conquest.’ In English, ujjayi is known as the ‘psychic breath’ because of its effect on the mind. Though it is described here as a specific practice, this pranayama occurs spontaneously when concentration becomes deep and intense. This kind of breathing is done through the nostrils, creating a hissing sound at the back of the throat with both inhalation and exhalation. “Ujjayi Pranayama is a balancing and calming diaphragmatic breathing, which increases oxygenation and builds internal body heat.” - Krishnamacharya Simply explained, Ujjayi Pranayama is the process of inhalation and exhalation that is done with both nostrils along with the contraction of the throat muscles. In addition to the contracting of the throat muscles, there should be subtle sound created which is more like soft snoring. This soft snoring should be audible only to the practitioner, although initially it may be loud, but with time, it should be soft and subtle. Awareness of the deep soft sound during inhalation and exhalation, is nothing but awareness of the psychic breath, hence the name to this pranayama - psychic breath. The practice of Ujjayi Pranayama is the watchful flow of normal breath through the nostrils, being fully aware of its flow moving through the throat, creating a sound. Observing this kind of breathing requires one to be completely aware of the senses, which are feeling and hearing. With full awareness when one feels and hears the vibration and sound at the throat with the air passing through, the body automatically receives signals to stay calm and relaxed. In simple words it is known as prana vidya - knowledge of your life force, where prana is life force, and vidya is knowledge. Ujjayi Pranayama is often included in the physical practice of asanas, commonly seen in Ashtanga Yoga, Vini Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga. It is said that, as one gets deeply involved in the practices of the asanas, this kind of breathing comes naturally. Furthermore, the inclusion of the psychic breathing during the physical practices helps raise the temperature of the body keeping it supple, to progress into more challenging poses. Ujjayi Pranayama makes us feel light and releases any type of rigidness from the body. For intense kind of practices, this type of breathing can be used in arm balance yoga poses and inversion yoga poses. Since this kind of breathing regulates the heat in the body, with the core muscles becoming warmer from the inside, the body is well prepared for the more advanced yoga. On the other hand, included in pranayama the psychic breath can be practiced with sitkari and sitali as part of the cooling process. Ujjayi Pranayama expands the breath and improves the quality of it. This will increase the flow of prana (vital energy) in the nadis (energy pathways).
