No correspondence. Ready for the hunt. A Militär Beamte (see below) with his Fernglas (binoculars), Jägerpfeife (hunter's pipe), double-barreled shotgun and trusty dachshund. The dachshund (literally badger-dog) is a popular hunting dog, with a keen sense of smell and owing to it's odd-shape, an ability to flush out badgers and other burrow-dwelling animals. From Handbook of Imperial Germany by Janet & Joe Robinson: "There were many men who wore uniforms inside Imperial Germany - customs officers, postal workers, railway men, foresters; a breed known as Beamten of officials. Former soldiers received preferential treament and hiring into these professions. These German bureaucrats quickly adopted the noncommissioned officer tone. The type of discussion or tone was known as barsch. This harsh or brusque tone was common among the police forces."
