Lo mio es bastante fácil, sólo tengo que hacer fotografías mientras que él tiene que estar alerta, siendo concreto, claro y concentrado todo el tiempo” decía Pete Souza de su trabajo como fotógrafo presidencial de La Casa Blanca en un documental emitido por The National Geographic y donde el presidente Barack Obama destaca la confianza y la amistad que le unen a Souza como una de las razones para no sentirse incómodo ante una presencia como la suya. Una presencia constante ya que con respecto al presidente, su acceso es total. Corbis Images Su trabajo, admirado por su calidad artística pero sobre todo por su carácter documental, contrasta por ejemplo, con las posibilidades de los fotógrafos españoles de acceder a este tipo de instantes de sus gobernantes. Algo similar a lo que les sucede a los periodistas con las ruedas de prensa sin preguntas, tan típicas en España como impensables en EEUU. Lo cierto es que, la del fotógrafo presidencial, es una tradición con más de medio siglo de antigüedad en EEUU. Lindon B. Johson la inauguró contratando para tal fin al fotógrafo Yoichi Okamoto, que dejó un legado único de imágenes de su presidencia, destacando por tener también un amplio acceso al día a día del presidente. Unas imágenes, al igual que en el caso de las de Obama, que humanizan al hombre que ostenta el cargo más poderoso del mundo. Una mano acariciando ligeramente la de su mujer, un semblante reflexivo, un gesto de firmeza, una expresión de gravedad en un momento duro o un instante de relax y de diversión, como el de cualquier ser humano. Son algunos de los retratos tomados por Pete Souza durante los primeros cuatro años de gobierno de Barack Obama pero Souza se ganó mucho antes la confianza de Obama durante la carrera a la Casa Blanca cuando este era el aspirante a candidato demócrata, al seguirle para un reportaje fotográfico para el periódico Chicago Tribune. Pete Souza (Flickr TWH) Por lo que de la combinación de confianza y accesibilidad, resultan imágenes como las de Obama jugando al baloncesto entre reuniones, las de escenas íntimas con su mujer o sus hijas, o instantáneas de momentos transcendentales como el gesto del presidente durante la operación militar que acabó con la muerte de Osama Bin Laden. De ahí que todos los gobiernos, todos los políticos e instituciones, deban replantearse la importancia de comunicar en imágenes, la importancia de plasmar detalles que ayuden a contar una historia (nuestra historia, nuestro relato, nuestra visión), en definitiva, la importancia de la figura del fotógrafo presidencial y su papel trascendental en la comunicación del gobierno. Pero ¿fotógrafos presidenciales? ¿Para qué? Elegir las fotos que llegarán al público es de suma importancia. Incluir el cuidado por este aspecto en la comunicación de un candidato o de un líder es importante porque nos aseguramos que controlaremos lo que comunica esa foto. Captan y están en momentos decisivos para ver y documentar lo que a menudo se encuentra fuera del alcance de los ojos del resto de ciudadanos de un país y con ello, ayuda a que te recuerden. Recuerdos de momentos decisivos, importantes, únicos. Imágenes con rostros o sin ellos, pero imágenes que cuentan un mensaje, un relato, una visión, una historia y consiguen que miles de personas entren en la intimidad del poder, al mismo tiempo que reflejan la dignidad del cargo. Algo que no parece fácil. EFE Por cierto, unas imágenes prácticamente inéditas como decíamos al principio, en el caso de cualquier presidente del Gobierno español porque La Moncloa olvida el poder de la fotografía estratégicamente con vistas al gran público ya que hay labores de un presidente que no pueden ser grabadas por una cámara de televisión pero sí inmortalizadas por una foto. La Casa Blanca lo sabe bien y cuando Obama llama por teléfono a cualquier líder extranjero durante una crisis o gestiona un desastre, una foto de Pete Souza muestra el modo de trabajar del presidente. Pete Souza (Flickr TWH) Pero los casos más importantes del uso de la fotografía para reforzar el mensaje y contribuir a la imagen de liderazgo de los líderes políticos, se encuentran además de en Estados Unidos, en Reino Unido con Andrew Parsons. ¿E internet? Internet es un gran aliado. Tanto La Casa Blanca como el 10 deDowning Street suben a sus perfiles en Flickr, todas las fotografías, permitiendo que sean esas y no otras las que puedan elegir, propagar y consumir los usuarios, haciendo de Internet una poderosa herramienta para ganar la batalla de la imagen en un mundo saturado de información. A menudo recordamos a un presidente por la imagen de ese momento. Los detalles cuentan. Las imágenes cuentan. Imágenes memorables. Las imágenes espontáneas de los poderosos son reveladoras por definición. Nos dan pistas sobre el funcionamiento interno y deja terreno a la imaginación Las fotografías hablan sin necesidad de palabras.
