This 32-page packet provides you with almost everything you need to conduct an investigation about airplane design and movement with elementary students. In this lesson, students will fold 1 of 3 paper airplane designs. Afterwards, they will become "pilots" and launch them as far as possible. The class will keep track of data such as how far each plane goes and how it moved in the air before analyzing the data to reach a conclusion. This lesson hits several critical thinking, problem solving, and analytical standards. It also addresses movement {HOW something moves and WHERE it moves} and engineering -- how does the design of a plane affect its flight? This packet contains the following: - 2 pages of notes to you about how to conduct this investigation, how to prepare, etc. - 5 pages of detailed lesson plans, including essential questions for the lesson. - 6 discussion questions {potential answers included} and the ability to add your own discussion question so that it matches the others for continuity when displayed to students - 6 different data sheets to record information during students' flight tests -- you can pick the one that best fits your students' needs - 1 non-editable recording sheet (2/page) - 4 editable recording sheets (2/page) -- either type directly onto the document before printing, or print blank copies so that students can do the majority of the writing - 1 editable 3-way Venn Diagram page to compare/contrast the 3 airplane designs, flight patterns, and flight lengths. The packet downloads as a PowerPoint file, so please make sure you have that program before purchasing. Thirteen pages contain editable elements; the rest of the pages are not editable. For this investigation, you will need to provide the following items: - 4 different airplane design templates - OPTIONAL items: sidewalk chalk, trundle wheel or yard stick, masking or painter's tape, goggles, calculator
