A Queen's messenger leaves Buckingham Palace in 1954, photograph by Carl Mydans. The only contact I ever had with a Queen's messenger was when I found one flat out drunk on the Horse Ride in the Mall.

This is another photograph by the Belgian photographer Leonard Misonne and dates from 1899, it shows the view from Lower Regent Street junction with Waterloo Place looking south across Pall Mall to the Duke of York Column. The Guards Crimean War Memorial is in the centre and the Athenaeum Club is at top right. The building on the left was demolished in 1909 and replaced with Cox's Bank, that same building is now a hotel.

This is an early 1930s advertisement for Beau Brummel Tailored Coats for children. The artist was Chloe Preston a famous children's' illustrator. The postcard comes from the Robert Opie collection of vintage brands. There have been several companies of that name, an American tie maker of the early 20th century and a modern British company which also manufactures children's clothes. The Guardsman is wearing accoutrements which were no longer worn after 1938.
There were two French people on the top deck of this London bus sometime in 1926, the famous photographer Jacques Henri Lartigue and his first wife Madeleine Lartigue née Messager also known as Bibi. Lartigue used her in a great number of his photographs and she was considered his muse. Lartigue is famous for his Edwardian Paris street photography and his pioneering use of the Lumiere Autochrome colour film. On this day the open top bus has just passed the junction of Praed Street and Harbet Road in Paddington just a short distance from the junction with Edgware Road. The building on the near corner is the Westminster Arms Public House and dates from 1869; it is now the Contrasti Hair and Beauty Salon.

This is a photograph of the paddle steamer "Royal Sovereign" leaving Old Swan Pier with her articulated funnels laid flat in order to negotiate passage under the Old London Bridge. It is May 1925 and not particularly warm by the look of it, the steamer is being operated by the Royal Sovereign Steamship Company on its north Kent route to Margate and Ramsgate. The "Royal Sovereign" was built by Fairfields on the Clyde in 1893 for New Palace Steamers a subsidiary of the Victoria Steamboat Association. The New Palace fleet consisted of the "Royal Sovereign", "Koh-I-Noor" and "La Marguerite". During the first world war she was laid up at Tilbury and in 1918 was sold to the Royal Sovereign Steamship Co and worked until 1929 when she was sold to Dutch shipbreakers.
