Keen that his designs be more widely disseminated, Chagall was closely involved with the production of the set of lithographs based upon his studies, created by the world famous Mourlot Frères of Paris: the publisher, James Parton, recalled how the artist stood beside the lithographer to watch the single sheets pass through the hand-fed stone press, one colour at a time...to catch every nuance of shading. Saul Raskin 1886-1966 Born in Nogaisk, Russia, Raskin studied painting at different art schools in Europe and in 1904 went to the United States. Raskin worked in many media and was known for his draftsman like attention to detail and his realist approach. He painted mostly scenes of Jewish life and lore especially Jewish life on he old lower east side of New York. His trip to Palestine yielded a series of paintings of old yishuv life there. Among them 20 lithographs on Jerusalem. Raskin also illustrated many Hebrew texts and books. Pirke Avot 1940; Haggadah 1941, Psalms 1942, the Siddur book 1945, the Kabalah called Kabalah in Word and Image 1952, and other works of Jewish content such as Hebrew Rhapsody 1959.
