The Three Brewers pub has been at this location since 1830, although after several name changes it is now a Japanese kitchen and bar called Akira. The three huge ornamental lamps were a commom sight on many pubs in the Victorian and Edwardian era. In this picture, the pub is selling beer brewed by the Cannon Brewery, founded around 1720 by Rivers Dickson at 192 St John Street, Clerkenwell. The brewery changed hands several times, finally becoming Ind Coope in 1960. Brewing at the Clerkenwell site ended in 1955. The horse and cart crossing Essex Road will have quite a tough job travelling uphill along Canonbury Road, as can be seen by the posture of the horse. The terrace and shops to the right of the pub have been replaced, as can be seen in the next comparison shot. N.B.
