Thought I would share another activity I had with my Activity Days girls last week. We were on a mission, we went undercover and performed 7 days worth of SecRet SerViCe. Before we got started we talked a bit about service and the blessings that come when we help others. I found some manila envelopes at the dollar store and personalized them with their names on them. Inside I included a pen and these "forms" that they were to fill out during the activity. I also included a list of ideas for serving to help get them going. I was also lucky to find these fun "undercover" glasses to stick inside. Just to help them really get into the part...AND they would know if anyone sneaking up on them ;) (they really did kind of work!) The girls thought it was great. Honestly, I was pretty surprised with how excited they were to get going on their challenge. A lot of them told me they were going to go home and get started right away. Just goes to show that it doesn't take much (couple of bucks at the dollar store) to get kids excited about doing things for others. It turned out to be a fun, easy way to teach the important principal of SeRviNg oTheRS...
Another fun activity that is a repeat for me! The girls really got into this one :) This would even be fun for a FHE with your kiddos! First off, we talked about service and why it's important. We talked about different people in our lives and how we can serve them. After that, I challenged them to find ways to provide service to everyone around them, and then we went into the Secret Service training. They received the following packet with the contents... Find the printables here. So the idea of this is the girls use the suggested service squares or come up with their own, perform the service, and leave their calling card (we did talk about that service doesn't always have to be recognized and doesn't need affirmation). They were coming up with fun things. We chose secret service agent names. I just came up with some adjectives, nouns, and numbers and had them draw out of a bowl. They enjoyed finding their names. Then we did some decoding. I just used a couple scriptures about service...i.e. when ye are in the service ye are only in the service of your God, etc. The Pigpen Decoder was a little bit more challenging for the 8-year olds, but most of them got it. So the shape on the code corresponds with the shapes on the tic-tac-toe board or the X. If there is a dot with the shape, that means it is the second letter. So for example, A is a backwards "L" shape, and X is a greater than sign with a dot in it. If this doesn't make sense...I'm sorry!!! Reverse alphabet is easy enough to understand. Just give the girls the decoder, and they did well. We wrote secret messages (I recommend doing this first so it has time to dry). I took equal parts of baking soda and water, mixed it up and we wrote messages with Q-tips. After completely dry, you can hold the paper up to a hot lamp (or I did mine over my range to go faster...I didn't let the girls do it, just let them watch as the message appeared. Didn't want any fires started!) The other game we played was basically hot potato. I had a small black ball I said was a bomb that we had to get rid of. I used my Catch Phrase game to use the timer. When time ran out, the person holding the bomb was out. We kept going until we had a winner. The girls were to go home and perform their services and return with stories on how they did :)

Adelle has prepped an amazing Family Night lesson all about performing secret acts of service. Get the whole family involved in ways to help others!
Next Sunday we are having a lesson on service. As I was browsing the web I came across this cute idea on Pinterest. I changed it just a bit to fit what I wanted, but the idea and much of it remained the same. I bought 6x9 clasp envelopes wrote the girls name and TOP SECRET on the outside. When they open the envelope there is a top secret assignment letter, a list of possible secret service ideas and a moustache that I connected to a white candy stick (I cut the moustache out with my silhouette machine). Here is what my letter said: Mission Possible A Seven Day Service Challenge Dear Agent ___________________, Your mission, if you choose to accept, is to secretly serve others. For the next seven days you are required to perform random acts of kind service. The difficulty lies in your ability to not be seen, caught on tape or otherwise have your identity compromised. Begin by choosing and locating your targets. Next, choose what service or kind deed you are going to perform. Third, perform the service without being caught. Finally, record your acts of service on the sheet below. Prepare for this mission by logging into www.lds.org with your secure password and read “You are my hands” a talk by President Uchtdorf. Good Luck on completing your mission. (Use the moustache for undercover emergencies only!) Monday ____________________________________________________________ Tuesday ____________________________________________________________ Wednesday__________________________________________________________ Thursday__________________________________________________________ Friday____________________________________________________________ Saturday____________________________________________________________ Sunday____________________________________________________________ “True love requires action. We can speak of love all day long - we can write notes or poems that proclaim it, sing songs that praise it, and preach sermons that encourage it - but until we manifest that love in action, our words are nothing but ‘sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal’ ”. President Dieter F. Uchtdorf (Ensign May 2010) The next letter was ideas on service they could perform. Here it is: Secret Service Ideas Do one of your brothers or sisters chores without them knowing. Make a treat and take it to someone. Ring the doorbell and run. Read to your younger siblings. Do what you can to make the day go smoothly without fighting with your siblings. Make a family members bed. Do the laundry. Write a nice note to someone and drop it by. Smile at 3 new people today. Secretly clean out your parents car. Call a friend and see how they are doing. Pick up any trash you see for a whole day. Don’t complain all day long. Tell someone you love that you love them (family member or friend). Secretly take your leader a special treat. Make someone feel loved. Prepare a meal for your family. Visit someone (not just a friend) who might be lonely...with your parents approval. Plan a Family Home Evening and invite a new family. Clean your room without being asked. Make something for someone and leave it for them to find on their pillow. Weed in the yard without being asked. Write a letter to a missionary. So something kind for someone you don’t know very well. Visit a less active member for the purpose of getting to know them better. Give sincere compliments to others throughout the day. Offer free babysitting for a couple who could use it. Speak kindly all day long..no negative or complaining words. My favorite thing was the moustache.
