Hello Everyone! Happy April! Poetry Month!! We are feeling so great!! We have poetry power! My kiddos became poets today! After gleaning inspiration from one of my favorite literacy guru's, Regie Routman, we made an anchor chart describing what poetry can help us do and what we already know about poetry. Poetry is "Powerful Points in Puny Packages!" Then I decided to let the kids "have-a-go" with writing their first poems. Our inspiration? Spring and "list poems." We brainstormed as many adjectives (some made up words!) as we could think of on chart paper. Now...which words to choose for those poems...?? AH-HA! Whirling Word Watchers to the rescue! I have been saving small water bottle for some time. We put in some paper punch confetti and put wiggly eyes on the top. Then each kiddo got a small wooden cube and wrote his six favorite words. The cube went into the bottle. TAH-DA! Whirling Word Watchers!! :) The kids had to whirl the bottle around and find the words! Those words were written onto a rough draft of the Spring List Poem. After a bit of editting, we were ready to publish! We love publishing with a craft connection!! They turned out beautifully!! We are Poets!! Whirling Word Watchers!!!
