From left to right: Yuan Ching-Han, Wang Han-Hsun(王漢勳), unknown pilot, Tsai Ming-Yong and Wang Wen-Hau. The pilot in the cockpit of Tomahawk #42 (P-8110 assigned to 2nd Squadron pilot William H. Fish, Jr.) is unknown. The photograph of the Chinese pilots was taken at Wujiaba Airport outside of Kunming. From R.T. Smith's diary for February 6, 1942 ("Tale of a Tiger," p. 210): "They are having 7 Chinese fighter pilots check out in P-40's starting today. Five of them checked out today & and did a pretty fair job of it, except for the 5th one. He came in & the cross-wind got him & he ground-looped. Wiped off the landing gear. & ruined the engine & wing tips." Immediately following the photograph of the pilots on the role of negatives are three shots of P-40 #6 after a wheels-up landing. Frank Losonsky noted the same check outs on Feb. 6 in his diary ("Flying Tiger: A Crew Chief's Story," p. 82): "Four Chinese pilots made successful take offs and landings. One Chines pilot ground looped the P-40." He noted, "I don't believe the Chinese pilots were any rougher on our ships than our own pilots." Thanks to Samuel Hui, David W. Chiao, and Raymond Cheung for identifing the pilots in the photograph. RT2136-1
