Nineveh was the oldest and most-populous city of the ancient Assyrian empire, situated on the east bank of the Tigris River and encircled by the modern city of Mosul, Iraq. It was located at the intersection of important trade routes, and its proximity to the Tigris added to the value of the fertile lands in the district.
