Get students up and engaged in friendly controversy as they match evidence with the reason it best supports. This lesson uses research about the benefits and drawbacks of homework to have students work backwards to figure out how evidence connects to reasons, and eventually determine the overall claim. This resource is a great lead in for an argumentation unit, or for when students are struggling to see how text evidence can support an idea (fiction or non-fiction). It gets students active and moving around while collaborating in pairs, so it’s also a great way to start off the school year in English class. Everything you need for this lesson is included in this resource as one pdf. This 21 page resource includes the following: Materials list Printing, copying, and set-up instructions Class procedure 6 reasons and 12 pieces of evidence, ready for print Teacher key If you like this lesson but want something with easier evidence for younger students, check out Evidence Bags middle school edition about the benefits and drawbacks of school uniforms or Evidence Bags middle school edition #2 about the benefits and drawbacks of technology in the classroom.
