Yosemite Valley, Yosemite National Park, California When I scheduled my spring trip to Yosemite, I was looking mostly at the weather, not paying much attention to astronomical events like a full moon. It turns out that it was moonbow week, a time when the mist thrown up by Yosemite Falls refracts the moonlight from a rising full moon and creates a lunar rainbow or moonbow. The little squib of moonbow in this photo was generated from the mist of the upper and middle falls. My location was in the meadow north of the Merced River. The truly intense photographers were in the photographer scrum at the base of the lower falls. I've photographed a rainbow (sunbow?) at the lower falls during a low flow year and wasn't particularly interested in a nighttime soaking spray during a very high flow year. I'm also not a fan of photographer scrums. Note the ravine to the left of the upper falls. That is the old course of Yosemite Creek before it switched to its current drop directly from the top of the valley.
