Heads, three monumental ceramic heads by Nebraska-based Jun Kaneko, each entitled HEAD (2004 to 2007), were on view in the Park Avenue Mall at landscaped medians at 52nd, 53rd, and 54th streets from June 21, 2008 to October 31, 2008. The three heads depict an Asian man with a calm expression—the artist, or perhaps the face of Buddha. Kaneko created these richly glazed ceramic works in one of his signature walk-in “beehive kilns.” The project was recommended by the Fund for Park Avenue Sculpture Committee, with support from Gebert Contemporary and the Grand Central Partnership. Japanese-born Kaneko has been based in Omaha, Nebraska since 1986. His artwork appears in numerous international and national solo and group exhibitions annually, and is included in more than seventy museum collections. He has realized over thirty public art commissions in the United States and Japan and is the recipient of national, state, and organization fellowships.
