Are you looking for a STEM activity that has easy prep, easy materials, and will produce amazing problem-solving for your students? This challenge will do all that! A minimum of materials is used with a fun, problem-solving dilemma that will have your students scratching their heads as they attempt this project! What is the challenge? In this challenge, students will design and build a tower that has some specific rules about two items- cups! The cups have constraints about their height and how close they can be to one another. One of the main building materials is straws and there are a few other items. This challenge is purely a problem-solving one with no particular scenario for the construction task. It’s just a fun one! (I did include some possible scenarios if you need them!) This would make a perfect challenge for STEM Friday, a reward for your class, an administrator visit to your classroom, or a task to be left with a sub! The package specifically includes: cover teacher background materials and preparation page 4 pages of teacher directions 4 pages of photographs 1 extra Hints page 2 lab sheets for student use (an easier version and a more challenging) 2 versions of task constraints (easier and more challenging) scoring rubric for the task Terms of Use page Also, all forms are provided in an editable format. The page count listed for this package includes everything. What is your prep? You will need supplies in addition to this package. This includes straws, card stock paper, foil, string, pipe cleaners, foam cups, and tape. This challenge will need 1-2 class sessions (1 hour) to complete.
