The former NYS Inebriate Asylum - This imposing Gothic Revival structure, which resembles an old castle, sits on a hill (250 acres of former farmland) overlooking the City of Binghamton. Founded by Joseph Edward Turner in 1854, construction began in 1858 on the Inebriate Asylum and was completed in 1864. It was the first institution designed and constructed to treat alcoholism as a mental disorder. This four-story structure, designed by Isaac G. Perry, built of limestone and brick is 350-feet-long in length by 50-70 feet deep. Noteworthy interior: duel staircases designed by Isaac Perry, stained glass windows and a two-story chapel. In 1879 the building was converted to an Asylum for the Chronic Insane. Later it would be known as the Binghamton State Hospital and the Binghamton Psychiatric Center. It operated as a state mental institution until deterioration of the building facade forced its closure in 1993. It has been abandoned since then. Located at 425 Robinson Street in BInghamton, NY.
