It is a great hands-on social studies activity that allows students to work cooperatively, demonstrate higher level thinking skills, and remain engaged throughout the lesson. Understanding the difference between primary sources and secondary sources is a key component of social studies instruction. Free poster set.
In this 5 page packet, students analyze maps, images, primary, and secondary sources to determine the main important features of Egyptian geography and how its geography impacted its development as a culture. Students answer questions, fill out a graphic organizer by reading a brief secondary source about Egyptian geography, and read an excerpt from the ancient Egyptian "Hymn to the Nile" to find evidence. They finish the packet with a review activity using an excerpt from the "Epic of Gilgamesh" to compare and contrast ancient Mesopotamian geography and culture with ancient Egyptian. A complete teacher answer key is included with this product. This packet can be used as a complete, Common Core aligned lesson plan in class, given for homework, or as a sub plan.
