A closer look may reveal two different blues. English consists in excerpts from my posts in dyeing communities. All on dyeing blue with black beans: In all my experiment simmering, boiling and so on will give a more grey-blue (slate blue/steel blue) than the cold soak. I just tuck beans and yarn, mordanted with alum, in a pot, pour on tap water and stir from time to time for 3 days. The result is more dependant on the beans than on the yarn, as long as it is scoured. I never, to the best of my knowledge, use superwash. After washing in soap suds I rinse in water. The last time, when no more bleeding occurs, I add a dash of Acetic acid. and I never saw any colour change that way. I tried washing some of my “bean-blue” knittings in machine at 40 C - it faded quite a bit (and will eventually wash out), but the tests in my sunlit window show almost no fading from October 2010 till summer 2011, but then it faded rather much. 3 parts beans to 1 part wool; soak beans for 3 days, add wool soak for 3 more days, rinse wool and use ;) Bønnefravet garn. Fra højre mod venstre: 1 dag i bønnevand, 3 dage i bønnevand, gult garn (lugtløs kamille) 2 dage i bønnevand; Småkogt hvidt og gult (lugtløs kamille) - (de grønne er grønnere i virkeligheden) Small test run l to r: 1 day in beans - 3 days in beans - scentless mayweed overdyed with beans 2 days. Simmered white and yellow (scentless mayweed).
