▲ History: Andy Warhol, Vesuvius, 1985 Acrylic on canvas, cm. 230 x 300 Naples, Museo di Capodimonte. Vesuvius is symbolic of nature?s destructive and creative force. The volcano?s forms, while harmonious and sensual, also evoke images of catastrophes and tragedy which have been depicted in numerous ways over the course of centuries and have become famous the world over. In his work, Warhol selected subjects which were either attractive and captivating, or, agonizing and frightening: the image of Vesuvius is characterised by all of these elements. ?An eruption is a overwhelming image, an extraordinary event and also makes for a fantastic piece of sculpture? (Warhol, 1985). As for other of his works, Warhol created various versions of Vesuvius in different colours and dimensions. This series of works was shown in a large exhibit dedicated to his works in 1985 at the Naples Capodimonte Museum. The images selected by Warhol for his works were the symbols and myths of his time: film and music stars, mug shots on wanted notices, Coca Cola bottles and Campbell?s Soup tins, car accidents, the electric chair, the atomic bomb, racial conflicts, Mao Tse tung - capitalism?s formidable enemy. Warhol depicted these subjects through the use of effective language, immediate, familiar to people of all social and cultural extractions: the visual language of publicity and mass media, the language of consumerism. ?You can be watching TV and see Coca Cola, and you know that the President drinks Coke, Liz Taylor drinks Coke and just think, you can drink Coke, too. A Coke is a Coke and no amount of money can get you a better Coke than the one the bum on the corner is drinking. All Cokes are the same...?
