This Rhetoric and Rhetorical Devices resource has everything you need to introduce rhetoric, rhetorical appeals (ethos, logos, pathos) and many rhetorical devices. Notes and Activities – Included in both a printable pdf and Google Slides format, the note-taking pages and the activities will help students understand some of the main appeals and devices that fall under the category of rhetoric. Students will write or type in definitions, complete activities, and even design their own pages or Google slides as they learn the ins and outs of rhetoric and rhetorical devices. Categorization is important for students. For many students, all ELA terms are jumbled together in their minds. The notes and activities will help students categorize rhetorical devices. For example, they will categorize those devices that fall under the following: sound devices, figurative language, diction, and syntax. The Google Slides can easily be sent out through Google Classroom, allowing you to monitor your students’ progress, and it will keep students actively involved in the learning process. We all know that simply lecturing about these devices will not be the most beneficial. By having students create their own notes or slides, they are taking responsibility for the content. Practice Persuasion Activities – These three quick activities will allow students to practice using the three major rhetorical appeals: ethos, logos, and pathos. You can have students work together with a partner as they complete these activities, or allow them to complete them independently. This practice is provided in a printable pdf and on Google Slides. Rhetorical Devices Test – A 26 question printable test and link to a self-grading Google Forms test is also included. All of the questions are multiple choice, and the test can be given once you feel students have a good grasp on the content. Of course, you can always edit the Google Form, removing any questions that you don’t like and adding questions too.
