The unmistakable flowers of Cryptostylis subulata are held above the forest floor on proud spikes. Superficially they resemble something more flesh and blood than flower. These flowers are sexually deceptive, ie. they attract wasps to mate with the flower in order to achieve pollination. Curiously, the genus is different to other sexually deceptive orchids in that multiple co-occurring species share the same pollinator. This photograph was taken at one such site where C. subulata grew only meters from C. erecta. What prevents the two species hybridizing is still not understood. Oh, and the wasps this species attracts can actually be provoked into ejaculation during pseudocopulation.
