If you’re looking for a fresh take on back-to-school icebreakers and community building activities, you have to try this hexagonal thinking lesson in your classroom! Students showcase their creativity and show you who they are as individuals by decorating a hexagon according to the prompts listed on the Six Sides of Me worksheet— but they must do so without writing any words— only images allowed! When all hexagons are completed and turned in, students work collaboratively to make visible connections between all students’ hexagons. When a connection is made between hexagons, the similar sides should be placed together to represent their commonalities. Each student’s hexagon must be connected to another hexagon on at least one side. It may not be immediately obvious how some hexagons relate to others, so students may need to stretch their brains to creatively make genuine connections. When complete, the final pattern represents the interconnectedness of your students as well as all the things they have in common. It’s hard to find lesson plans that encourage creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving skills all at once. Your students will love the opportunity to share who they are (without awkwardly standing up in front of the class to share a fun fact) and will enjoy getting to know each other in a more interactive and authentic way.
