Location: Lady's Lane, Mears Ashby, Northamptonshire, England. The church featured here is the 12th Century All Saints church. The first stone building, consisting of just the nave and chancel was built shortly after 1100 and the tower added circa 1220. There was almost certainly a timber built church on the site previous to this. Northamptonshire and Mears Ashby in particular has a long tradition of witchcraft and accusations of witchcraft. As late as 1785 the poor unfortunate Sarah Bradshaw, a local inhabitant, was so accused. We learn from the Northampton Mercury on 1 August 1785 that: "Thursday last, a poor woman, named Sarah Bradshaw of Mears Ashby...who was accused by some of her neighbours of being a witch, in order to prove her innocence, submitted to the ignominy of being dipped (on a ducking-stool); when she immediately sunk to the bottom of the pond; which was deemed an incontestable proof that she was no witch!" (So, if you drowned you were not a witch but if you didn't drown you were a witch and got burned at the stake. I'm beginning to see a slight flaw in the old British justice system here!). Anyway, it is told that her ghost can still be seen roaming around in the churchyard on each and every anniversary of her death.
