He was the oldest of five children. At 17, he moved away to New York City and worked odd jobs. In 1921 he enrolled in the National Academy of Design. In 1928 he moved to Paris to study art. He married Holga Krake in 1930, a Danish Textile Artist. Both were successful artists and they traveled in Europe. With the advent of WWII, they returned to NYC. After his wife's death, his health and life declined. He died in a mental institution in 1947. **** Activities for each worksheet: 1. Little Sweet. Position a chair in the front of your room, with a blank wall behind. Ask for a volunteer to come up and pose in the chair for 5 minutes while the students sketch the model. Then give them 20 minutes to create their drawing. 2. Art Room Have the students first create a sketch of their art class with 3 students. Then they can complete their drawing. 3. Three Friends The students are to draw a portrait of their three friends in the sketch box. Then have them create a finished drawing below. 4. The Children's Dance Have your students recall a dance party. Maybe you could play some music and have them dance in your room? They can sketch it out in the box when done. Have them draw full length figures. Then, complete their final drawing with a plain background. 5. Raise up your Voice and Sing. Go ahead, lead your class in song and let them stand up. Then have the children sit down and sketch it out including you in the sketch. When they are ready, they can make their final drawing. 6. Family Portrait Have the students bring in family pictures to create their own family sketch. If no pictures, they can use their memory.
