This month was a real mixed bag for me. I started September with a bang, reading and listening to several 5 star books. But the last two weeks of the month were a bust with nothing on my audiobook playlist and none of my books from the library holding my attention. Ho hum! At least, the books from the beginning of the month are ones I can highly recommend. Here are my latest books and shows from the month of September. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Evvie Drake Starts Over by Linda Holmes Set in a small town in Maine, a young widow who rarely leaves her house rents a room to a world class pitcher from NYC who is in a slump. I really enjoyed these characters, and the relationship they have with each other and their friends and family just seems real. This is one of those quirky stories that comes together in all the right ways. And I love the cover too! (BONUS: NPR interview with the author, who is herself an NPR host.) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Things We Cannot Say by Kelly Rimmer The World War II genre has become so popular, and a book really has to be exceptional to stand out from the crowd of titles. This book is definitely one that caught my attention and rose above some of the other WWII titles I've read recently. The story is told with a dual storyline, one set in 1940's Poland and the other in modern-day America. Teenager Alina is engaged to marry Tomasz before the Nazi's invade their country. Modern day Alice is searching for answers about her grandmother. You will love these characters and the way their stories intertwine. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Southern Side of Paradise by Kristy Woodson Harvey This is the third book in a series about a mother and three daughters in coastal Georgia. It was my favorite, and I just loved it! Each book has focused on a different daughter, and Emerson the youngest was the star of this one. I actually listened to the audio version, and the narrators were top notch. I highly recommend this one, either as a summer beach read or to read in the winter when you need a warm, sunny getaway. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Never Have I Ever by Joshilyn Jackson Amy is living a typical suburban life, but she has a secret that could destroy her. Roux moves into the neighborhood and seems to have a way of getting intwined in everyone's lives. I really enjoyed this domestic suspense book, and it kept me guessing. The first part of the book really held my attention, while the end had a few unbelievable twists. I still recommend for an intriguing read, despite some mixed reviews I have seen. TV/MOVIES Michael and I have been binge watching Mindhunter on Netflix. It is about the FBI in the 1970's beginning to use psychological profiling to solve crimes. Note that this is a strong R-rating with disturbing info about serial killers. But if you like true crime, this might be a show for you. These two Netflix documentaries were really interesting. Inside Bill's Brain - how Bill Gates started Microsoft and what his foundation is doing now American Factory - how things go when a Chinese company takes over an American factory The Downton Abbey movie was sooo good! If you've never watched the series, go back to season 1 on Prime Video. In summary, here's what I read in September: Evvie Drake Starts Over by Linda Holmes The Things We Cannot Say by Kelly Rimmer The Southern Side of Paradise by Kristy Woodson Harvey Never Have I Ever by Joshilyn Jackson What have you been reading and watching lately?
