The photographer, thought to be John Warwick Brooke, took this photograph very near to the enemy, during an attack, but the atmosphere is calm. A French armoured car is ready to give covering fire for British troops further up the road. Several British soldiers are bringing a wounded man back up the road, away from the fighting. Armoured cars were useful in this type of situation as they were lighter and more easily manoeuvrable than tanks or heavier artillery.
